A contribution, not a tax — and a wardrobe of materials before a single wall is built

‘That they take for me a contribution’ (v2) is deliberately not a command to hand something over. The offering is qualified twice in one clause — ‘from every man WHOSE HEART MOVES HIM’ — a voluntary gift, not the fixed half-shekel census levy this book will require later. The whole tabernacle, on its own terms, is funded by willingness before it is funded by silver.

⚠ The materials list (vv3–7) reads like an inventory before it reads like theology, and one item on it has defeated translators for centuries: the tachash skins (v5). KJV reads ‘badgers’ skins’ — following Martin Luther’s guess that the Hebrew sounded like the German Dachs, badger, though badgers neither live in Sinai nor yield a hide large enough to cover a tent. NIV reads ‘the other durable leather’ in the main text with ‘sea cow’ as a footnoted alternative, following the leading modern guess — an Arabic cognate applied to dolphins, seals, and dugongs in the Red Sea. This translation keeps the Hebrew, on the same policy used elsewhere for words this genuinely uncertain.

‘Let them make me a sanctuary, THAT I MAY DWELL AMONG THEM’ (v8) states the whole purpose of the next fifteen chapters in one line, and the preposition matters. Not ‘that I may dwell IN IT’ — the text does not say the building houses God the way a house houses a family. It says the building lets God dwell among the people; the structure is the occasion, the people are the address. ⚠ V9’s pattern (tavnit), shown to Moses and never described to the reader, governs everything that follows for the rest of this section — Moses is not designing a building, he is copying one he has been shown.

⚠ A box no one may ever set down, and a name Tyndale invented

The poles that carry the ark ‘shall not be removed from it’ (v15) — a single, easy-to-miss clause with a real practical consequence. Every other piece of tabernacle furniture in this chapter has poles fitted for carrying; only the ark is told, explicitly, that its poles stay in the rings permanently. The most sacred object in the whole structure is built, by law, to never be set down and never be touched directly — it travels perpetually ready to move, which is exactly the condition a people crossing a wilderness needs.

⚠ ‘Cover’ (kapporet, v17) is the literal word, and ‘mercy seat’ is not a translation of it — it is a 16th-century theological gloss. The Hebrew root, kaphar, means to cover or wipe away, with a secondary sense of atone; William Tyndale coined ‘mercy seat’ under the influence of Luther’s German Gnadenstuhl, ‘seat of grace’ — a beautiful phrase, and not what the Hebrew word itself says. KJV and ASV both keep Tyndale’s ‘mercy seat’; NIV renders the more literal ‘atonement cover’, the reading closer to what this translation follows. The Septuagint’s Greek, hilastērion, ‘the thing that atones’, and the Vulgate’s Latin propitiatorium both preserve the same secondary sense — a covering that also atones — without inventing a piece of furniture the Hebrew word never names.

The cherubim here are not the first cherubim on these pages, and the contrast is the whole point. The only other cherubim so far stood at Eden’s gate, ‘to guard the way to the tree of life’ (Genesis 3:24, already on these pages) — barring humanity FROM God’s presence. These two, wings spread and faces bowed toward each other over the cover, do not guard an exit; they frame an entrance. ‘There I will MEET with you’ (v22) is the promise the Eden cherubim made structurally impossible, now made from between an identical pair of figures.

Bread that is never eaten by the one it is set before

The table’s whole purpose is compressed into its last clause: ‘bread of the presence’, before me always (v30). Twelve loaves — not named as twelve here, but fixed at that number once the practice is spelled out in full later — kept perpetually in Jehovah’s own sight on a table built specifically to hold them, replaced on a schedule the chapter never states. This is the earliest institution of the table itself; the fuller weekly-replacement ritual is developed only much later, at Leviticus 24:5–9, not yet on these pages.

⚠ This table’s bread gets one of the more surprising afterlives of any object in this chapter. When David, fleeing Saul, needs food for himself and his men, the priest at Nob gives him exactly this bread — and centuries later Jesus cites the episode by name to defend his own disciples for plucking grain on the sabbath: ‘have you not read what David did’ (Matthew 12:3–4, already on these pages, whose own note traces the practice to Leviticus rather than to the table’s actual origin here). A piece of furniture specified in a materials list becomes, a millennium and a half later, the precedent for a rabbi’s argument about the sabbath.

A lamp with no human hand feeding its oil, six centuries before it needs one

The lampstand is not assembled from parts — it is ‘hammered work’, one solid piece of gold beaten into shape, base and shaft and six branches and their almond-blossom cups all ‘of one piece with it’ (vv31, 36). Nothing here is soldered, screwed, or joined; the whole object is a single sculpture struck out of a single mass of metal, a manufacturing detail the text repeats three times as if daring the reader to imagine how.

⚠ This is not the last lampstand on these pages — it recurs almost exactly, and also not quite, in a vision seen roughly nine hundred years later. Zechariah’s fourth night-vision opens on ‘a lampstand, all of it gold… and seven lamps on it’ (Zechariah 4:2, already on these pages) — the same seven-lamp count, the same solid-gold construction. But Zechariah’s version has grown a feature this one does not: a bowl and pipes feeding it oil automatically from two olive trees standing beside it, so that no priest ever has to trim or refill it by hand. This chapter’s lampstand needs v37’s human ‘they shall light its lamps’; Zechariah’s does not — the difference between a lamp that is tended and one that tends itself is exactly the difference the later vision is built to make.

The chapter closes where it opened: ‘according to their pattern, which is being shown to you ON THE MOUNTAIN’ (v40) restates v9’s tavnit almost word for word. Everything between those two lines — the ark, the cover, the cherubim, the table, the lampstand — is presented as a copy of something Moses is shown, never as his own design.
