One name, once, and then twenty-eight verses of ‘he’

‘Bezalel made the ark’ (v1) is the only time this chapter names its craftsman — every verse after this one simply says ‘he made,’ unnamed but understood, all the way to its close. The previous chapter credited the tent’s outer structure to a whole team, ‘every man who was wise of heart’ (Exodus 36:1–2, already on these pages). Here, for the innermost and most sacred furniture — the ark, the cover, the cherubim, the table, the lampstand, the altar of incense — the text narrows to one man, named once and then simply assumed for the rest of the chapter.

The cover and its cherubim are built exactly as promised (Exodus 25:17–22, already on these pages, with its own note on the contrast to Eden’s guardian cherubim); this chapter adds nothing to that theology and does not need to — its whole purpose is simply to report that the promise has now become an object, wings spread, faces bowed toward each other over gold Bezalel personally beat into shape.

⚠ Verse 8 carries a ketiv/qere on the word for ‘its two ends’ — Mechon-Mamre prints the unpointed written form beside the pointed one it is read as, a purely orthographic variant with no change in meaning — kept here as received, an ordinary scribal note surfacing in the middle of an extraordinary object.

A table built to be carried, never to be admired

Every measurement here repeats Exodus 25:23–30, already on these pages, and every vessel — dishes, pans, bowls, jars for pouring — is made, like the ark, of solid gold. ⚠ What the repetition makes newly visible is how much of the design is about MOVEMENT rather than display: a rim to keep things from sliding off in transit, rings placed ‘close by the rim’ specifically so the staves sit high and steady, staves that never come out. This is furniture engineered for a people who are, at every point in this book so far, about to move again. ⚠ The vessel list itself (v16) is a real fork in the shelf, especially its last item: KJV reads ‘his dishes, and his spoons, and his bowls, and his covers to cover withal’; ASV reads ‘the flagons thereof, wherewith to pour out’; NIV and NASB both specify ‘pitchers/jars…to pour out drink offerings.’ The KJV pictures a lid; every other major version pictures a pitcher — two different table settings from the same four Hebrew nouns.

A lamp beaten from a single block of gold, exactly as promised

‘All of it was one piece of hammered work of pure gold’ (v22) repeats, almost word for word, the same claim made three times over about this same object seven chapters earlier (Exodus 25:31–36, already on these pages, whose own note traces this lampstand’s strange afterlife in Zechariah’s night-vision). No solder, no joints, no separate pieces fitted together afterward — base, shaft, six branches, and every almond-shaped cup struck from a single mass of gold. The text does not explain how; it simply repeats the claim until the reader has to take it as a statement about the object’s significance, not just its manufacture.

An altar out of order, and the one recipe measured by smell, not by the ruler

The altar of incense belongs, instruction-wise, to a much later chapter (Exodus 30:1–10, already on these pages) — but here it is built alongside the ark, the table, and the lampstand, not alongside the outer bronze altar its own name most resembles. The chapter groups its furniture by WHERE each piece stands, inside the tent versus outside it, rather than by the order the instructions were originally given. Gold objects for the inner room are built together; the bronze altar for the courtyard waits for its own chapter.

⚠ Its horns are ‘of one piece with it’ (v25), the identical phrase already used of the bronze altar’s own horns (Exodus 27:2, already on these pages) — two altars, one gold and one bronze, one inside and one outside, built by the same rule. The chapter closes with the holy anointing oil and incense, ‘the work of a perfumer’ (v29) — the one ingredient list in this whole account that cannot be measured in cubits, made by smell and proportion rather than by a ruler.
