A tent within a tent, and one word for ‘curtain’ that quietly stops meaning the same thing

The tabernacle proper is not the outer shape a visitor would have seen — it is the INNER lining, ten linen curtains woven with cherubim (vv1–6), draped and clasped together first. Only after that inner set is finished does the text move outward to an eleven-curtain goat-hair covering ‘for a tent OVER the tabernacle’ (v7) — a second, larger, coarser layer whose whole job is to protect the fine one inside it, followed in turn by two more weatherproofing layers of dyed rams’ skins and tachash skins (v14, the same uncertain word already flagged at 25:5). Structurally: sanctuary, then tent, then weather — three concentric shells, most sacred nearest the center.

‘Worked in by a skilled designer’ (v1) is a specific craft-term, not a generic compliment, and this chapter is where its full significance becomes visible. The Talmud (Yoma 72b) and later commentators distinguish this term (ma’aseh choshev) from a second one this chapter also uses (ma’aseh rokem, v36): choshev-work is woven so the design reads identically on BOTH faces of the fabric, while rokem-work is stitched onto one face only, leaving the reverse plain. The distinction is not decorative trivia — it tracks exactly which curtains in this chapter get cherubim (the inner lining here, and the veil at v31, both choshev) and which do not (the outer screen at v36, plain rokem). The deeper into the structure, the more expensive the weave.

⚠ A wall no one can agree was solid, and a board with two ‘hands’

Whether the boards of vv15–29 were solid planks or open frames is a genuine, unresolved debate, and the two English-language camps split almost exactly down denominational and chronological lines. KJV, ASV, and NASB all read ‘boards’ — solid slabs of acacia, standing edge to edge like a plank wall. NIV, ESV, and NLT all read ‘frames’ — an open, ladder-like construction, vertical members joined by crosspieces, with the curtain fabric itself forming the visible wall. The practical case for frames is straightforward: a solid acacia plank ten cubits (roughly fifteen feet) tall and a cubit and a half wide would be extraordinarily heavy for forty-eight of them to be carried through a wilderness by hand, and a solid wall would hide the cherubim-woven inner curtains from the priests serving inside — the very curtains this chapter spent its first six verses describing in loving detail. No consensus exists; this translation keeps the traditional ‘boards’ while flagging the case for the alternative.

⚠ Each board’s two tenons (v17) are, in the Hebrew, literally its two ‘HANDS’ (yadot, the plural of yad, ‘hand’) — the pegs at its base reaching down into the paired silver sockets below, ninety-six sockets in all funded, later in the book, by the half-shekel census offering of every counted Israelite man (Exodus 38:25–27, not yet on these pages). The chapter closes this section (v30) with ‘according to its mishpato’ — the same root, mishpat, that named the whole law-code four chapters back (the Mishpatim, Exodus 21–23, already on these pages); here it means simply ‘plan’ or ‘design’, but the echo is real — the tabernacle has its own mishpat, its own binding ordinance, restated from Moses’s own pattern-vision at 25:9 and 25:40.

⚠ The curtain a much later writer will not name, and the third pair of cherubim on these pages

The veil that hangs before the ark (vv31–33) is the THIRD set of cherubim to appear on these pages, and each pair has done something structurally different. The first pair stood at Eden’s gate, barring the way back to the tree of life (Genesis 3:24, already on these pages). The second pair, hammered in gold, spread their wings over the ark’s cover and framed the place where God promised to meet Moses (Exodus 25:18–22, already on these pages). This third pair, woven into the veil itself, now marks the boundary a human being crosses to reach that meeting-place — ‘the veil shall DIVIDE for you between the holy place and the most holy’ (v33). Guardian, then witness, then threshold.

⚠ A much later scene turns on this exact curtain, or possibly its plainer neighbor, and the Greek text that reports it will not say which. When Jesus dies, ‘the curtain of the sanctuary was torn in two, from top to bottom’ (Matthew 27:51, already on these pages) — and this chapter is the reason that ambiguity is real, not a translator’s vagueness. Hebrew names two entirely distinct hangings here: this VEIL (parochet), guarding the ark itself, woven with cherubim by the same craft as the tabernacle’s inner lining; and the plainer SCREEN (masakh) at the tent’s outer door, v36 below, embroidered but bearing no cherubim at all. The Septuagint’s Greek translates BOTH Hebrew words with the same term, katapetasma — so when Matthew’s Gospel later uses that one Greek word for the curtain torn at the crucifixion, the text genuinely cannot say, and does not try to say, which of these two curtains — the inner or the outer — is meant.

The plainer curtain, and a craft-word that completes the contrast

The screen at the tent’s public entrance (vv36–37) uses the same four dyed threads as every curtain in this chapter, but not the same craftsmanship, and the difference is the whole point of the chapter’s design. Its ‘work of an embroiderer’ (ma’aseh rokem) is stitched onto one face of the fabric only — visible to anyone approaching from outside, plain from within — and it carries no cherubim, unlike the inner curtains (v1) and the veil before the ark (v31), both made by the two-faced choshev weave. A worshiper standing at the tabernacle’s door sees color without guardians; only past the veil, where almost no one ever stands, do the cherubim appear at all.
