1
Y Jehová habló a Moisés, diciendo:
2
This shall be the law for the one with scaly disease, on the day of his cleansing: he shall be brought to the priest.
note
And the priest shall go out, outside the camp; and the priest shall look, and if the affliction of the scaly disease is healed in the one who had it,
note
the priest shall command that two living clean birds be taken for the one to be cleansed, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop.
note
And the priest shall command that one bird be slaughtered in an earthen vessel, over
living water.
note
As for the living bird, he shall take it, and the cedar wood, and the scarlet, and the hyssop, and shall dip them and the living bird in the blood of the bird that was slaughtered over the living water.
note
And he shall sprinkle it on the one to be cleansed from the scaly disease seven times, and shall pronounce him clean, and shall let the living bird go free over the open field.
note
And the one to be cleansed shall wash his clothes, and shave off all his hair, and bathe in water, and he shall be clean; and after that he may come into the camp, but shall stay outside his tent seven days.
note
And on the seventh day he shall shave off all his hair — his head, and his beard, and his eyebrows, all his hair he shall shave off — and he shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and he shall be clean.
note
And on the eighth day he shall take two male lambs without blemish, and one ewe-lamb a year old without blemish, and three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour for a grain-offering, mixed with oil, and one
log of oil.
note
And the priest who cleanses him shall set the man to be cleansed, and these things, before Jehovah, at the entrance of the
tent of meeting.
note
And the priest shall take one male lamb, and offer it for a
guilt-offering, along with the log of oil, and wave them as a wave-offering before Jehovah.
note
And he shall slaughter the lamb in the place where the
sin-offering and the burnt-offering are slaughtered, in the holy place — for as the sin-offering belongs to the priest, so does the guilt-offering; it is most holy.
note
And the priest shall take some of the blood of the guilt-offering, and the priest shall put it on the tip of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot.
note
And the priest shall take some of the log of oil, and pour it into the palm of his own left hand.
note
And the priest shall dip his right finger in the oil that is in his left palm, and shall sprinkle some of the oil with his finger seven times before Jehovah.
note
And of the rest of the oil that is in his palm, the priest shall put some on the tip of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot, on top of the blood of the guilt-offering.
note
And the rest of the oil that is in the priest’s palm he shall put on the head of the one to be cleansed; and the priest shall make atonement for him before Jehovah.
note
And the priest shall offer the sin-offering, and make atonement for the one to be cleansed, because of his uncleanness; and afterward he shall slaughter the
burnt-offering.
note
holocausto.
20
וְהֶעֱלָה הַכֹּהֵן אֶת-הָעֹלָה וְאֶת-הַמִּנְחָה, הַמִּזְבֵּחָה; וְכִפֶּר עָלָיו הַכֹּהֵן, וְטָהֵר. {ס}
And the priest shall offer up the burnt-offering and the grain-offering on the altar; and the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be clean.
note
But if he is poor, and his means do not reach that far, he shall take one male lamb as a guilt-offering, to be waved, to make atonement for him, and one-tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain-offering, and a log of oil,
note
and two turtle-doves, or two young pigeons, whichever his means can reach; and one shall be a sin-offering, and the other a burnt-offering.
note
And he shall bring them, on the eighth day of his cleansing, to the priest, to the entrance of the tent of meeting, before Jehovah.
note
And the priest shall take the lamb of the guilt-offering, and the log of oil, and the priest shall wave them as a wave-offering before Jehovah.
note
And he shall slaughter the lamb of the guilt-offering, and the priest shall take some of the blood of the guilt-offering, and put it on the tip of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot.
note
And the priest shall pour some of the oil into the palm of his own left hand.
note
And the priest shall sprinkle, with his right finger, some of the oil that is in his left palm, seven times before Jehovah.
note
And the priest shall put some of the oil that is in his palm on the tip of the right ear of the one to be cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot, on the place of the blood of the guilt-offering.
note
And the rest of the oil that is in the priest’s palm he shall put on the head of the one to be cleansed, to make atonement for him before Jehovah.
note
And he shall offer one of the turtle-doves, or of the young pigeons, whichever his means can reach —
note
whichever his means can reach, the one as a sin-offering, and the other as a burnt-offering, along with the grain-offering; and the priest shall make atonement, before Jehovah, for the one to be cleansed.
note
32
זֹאת תּוֹרַת, אֲשֶׁר-בּוֹ נֶגַע צָרָעַת, אֲשֶׁר לֹא-תַשִּׂיג יָדוֹ, בְּטָהֳרָתוֹ. {פ}
This is the law for the one who has an affliction of scaly disease, whose means do not reach far enough for his cleansing.
note
And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to
Aaron, saying:
note
Y Jehová habló a Moisés y a Aarón, diciendo:
34
When you come into the land of Canaan, which I am giving you as a possession, and I put an affliction of scaly disease in a house of the land of your possession,
note
the one who owns the house shall come and tell the priest, saying: ‘There seems to me to be something like an affliction in the house.’
note
And the priest shall command that they empty the house, before the priest goes in to look at the affliction, so that everything in the house is not made unclean; and after that the priest shall go in to look at the house.
note
And he shall look at the affliction, and if the affliction is in the walls of the house, hollow streaks, greenish or reddish, and their appearance is lower than the wall,
note
the priest shall go out of the house, to the entrance of the house, and shut up the house seven days.
note
And the priest shall come back on the seventh day, and look; and if the affliction has spread in the walls of the house,
note
the priest shall command that they take out the stones the affliction is in, and throw them outside the city, into an unclean place.
note
And he shall have the house scraped inside, all around, and they shall pour out the dust that they scraped off outside the city, into an unclean place.
note
And they shall take other stones, and bring them in place of those stones; and he shall take other plaster, and plaster the house.
note
But if the affliction comes back, and breaks out in the house, after the stones have been taken out, and after the house has been scraped, and after it has been plastered,
note
then the priest shall come in and look, and if the affliction has spread in the house, it is a malignant scaly disease in the house — it is unclean.
note
And he shall break down the house — its stones, and its timber, and all the plaster of the house — and carry it outside the city, to an unclean place.
note
And whoever goes into the house, all the while it is shut up, shall be unclean until evening.
note
And whoever lies down in the house shall wash his clothes; and whoever eats in the house shall wash his clothes.
note
But if the priest comes in, and looks, and the affliction has not spread in the house after the house was plastered, the priest shall pronounce the house clean, because the affliction is healed.

Outside the camp — and the word this project already promised: living water
The chapter never once uses a noun for the person at its center — not ‘the leper’, only ‘the one with scaly disease’, ‘the one to be cleansed’. Hebrew has such a noun, m’tzora, and v2 uses it exactly once, as a label for the LAW itself (‘this shall be the law of the m’tzora’) rather than to address the person directly through the rest of the chapter, which keeps returning to participles — the one being cleansed, the afflicted person. This translation follows that lead and never prints ‘leper’ as an English noun, for the same reason it retired ‘leprosy’ one chapter back.
And the priest is the one who moves. The healed person cannot yet enter; the boundary of the camp is absolute until a verdict is given, so the examination happens at the edge, not inside it. Two living birds, cedar wood, scarlet thread, and hyssop are brought; one bird is killed in an earthen bowl over living water — not ‘running’ or ‘fresh’ water, which is what nearly every English and Spanish version prints, but the literal Hebrew mayim CHAYIM, water that is alive. ⚠ This project’s own note on John 4 already named this verse before it existed on these pages — flagging that Greek hydōr zōn, what Jesus offers the woman at the well, is ‘the same idiom Hebrew has in mayim chayim, the “living water” required for certain purifications’. This is that purification, named by name: a healed person, cleared for return, cleansed with water the text itself calls living. KJV, ASV and NWT all read ‘running water’; NIV reads ‘fresh water’; on the Spanish shelf RV60 has ‘aguas corrientes’ and NVI ‘agua de manantial’ — six versions, two languages, and not one keeps the word ‘alive’ that is actually there.
The second bird is dipped alive in the first bird’s blood and the living water together, sprinkled seven times, and released ‘over the open field’ — nothing further is said about it, and the text does not explain the image, though the shape (one creature dies, a second visibly carries something away and is let go) is one this book will use again on a larger scale. Only after this does the process turn inward: washed clothes, a bath, and then — on the seventh day — total, deliberate baldness, head, beard and eyebrows shaved bare. ⚠ That is worth setting directly against the chapter just before this one: Leviticus 13:40–41 (already on these pages) declared ordinary, involuntary baldness harmless, no examination needed. Here baldness is not tolerated. It is required — not a symptom to be cleared but the ritual itself, undergone on purpose.
The eighth day — the same three points Aaron’s own ordination touched
Seven days after re-entering the camp, on the eighth, comes the rite this chapter has been building toward: blood and oil applied to the tip of the right ear, the thumb of the right hand, and the big toe of the right foot. That is not a generic gesture. It is, point for point and in the same order, Aaron’s own ordination — Leviticus 8:23–24 (already on these pages), where the identical three places on Aaron’s own body receive the identical blood, before he can serve as priest at all. This project’s own note on that verse called it consecrating ‘hearing, doing, and walking’ — the body’s working parts, made ready one at a time. Here the ceremony that ordained a man into the priesthood is run again on an ordinary Israelite returning from outside the camp, with no comment at all on the parallel. The text simply repeats the gesture and expects the reader who has been paying attention to notice.
⚠ Oil follows the blood, in the same three places, from the priest’s own left palm — poured, sprinkled seven times ‘before Jehovah’, dabbed with a finger, and finally poured out whole over the head. No other purification in this book uses oil this way, on a person rather than an object or an altar; the closest parallel is again Aaron’s own anointing (Leviticus 8:12, already on these pages), oil poured on the head alone, with nothing dabbed to ear, hand or foot. The healed person receives BOTH halves of what only a priest and a priest-in-training separately received before — not because he is being made a priest, the text never says that, but because re-entry into a holy people is treated, physically, with the same vocabulary as entry into holy service.
Only after the ear-thumb-toe rite does the ordinary sacrificial machinery run: sin-offering, then burnt-offering, then grain-offering, ‘and the priest shall make atonement for him’ — the same closing formula this book has used since Leviticus 4 (already on these pages), applied here to a person whose only fault was having been sick.
‘Such as his means suffice for’ — the concession this book keeps making
The full rite costs three animals: two lambs and a ewe-lamb. The poor version costs one lamb and two birds — and the phrase ‘such as his means suffice for’ (or its equivalent) is repeated four times in twelve verses, once for nearly every substitution the poor person is allowed to make. What does NOT get cut is the ear-thumb-toe rite itself: v25 runs it in full, blood from the single guilt-offering lamb touched to the identical three points, oil applied the identical way. The concession is entirely in the animals’ number and price, never in the ceremony’s content — a poorer household is not given a smaller welcome back.
⚠ This is the identical concession Leviticus 12:8 (already on these pages) already made for a woman who could not afford a lamb after childbirth — there, two birds standing in for one lamb; here, birds standing in again, this time alongside a guilt-offering lamb that cannot itself be substituted (a guilt-offering, unlike a sin-offering, has no bird-tier anywhere in this book). Two different laws, two chapters apart, reach for the same solution to the same problem: need is met without being priced.
A house that doesn’t exist yet — the same law, a third time
‘When you come into the land of Canaan’ — v34 is the only line in this whole two-chapter law that is not spoken for the wilderness camp at all. Nobody at Sinai owns a house with a plastered stone wall; the nation lives in tents. This is legislation written in advance for a settlement that has not happened yet, extending the identical diagnostic vocabulary — affliction, examine, confine seven days, spreading, malignant — from skin (Leviticus 13, already on these pages) to fabric (Leviticus 13 again) to architecture, the third domain in as many chapters governed by one method.
⚠ And the text states outright, without hedging, that Jehovah is the one who puts the affliction in the house (‘I put a scaly-disease affliction in a house’, v34) — a claim of direct agency this book never makes for a person’s skin or a garment’s mold, both simply described as occurring. Later Jewish tradition (the Mishnah’s tractate Nega’im) took the hint literally enough to treat house-tzaraat as a special, didactic sign rather than ordinary mildew — some rabbis went so far as to hold it had never actually occurred and never would, existing in the text purely ‘to be expounded and receive reward’. The chapter itself does not go that far; it gives the priest a perfectly ordinary quarantine-scrape-replaster-and-reassess procedure, with a demolition clause if the mold returns a third time.
One practical detail is easy to miss and worth naming: before the priest ever steps inside to examine a suspected house (v36), the owner empties it. Furniture, dishes, whatever the household owns comes out FIRST — not to hide anything, but so that an eventual unclean verdict on the house does not retroactively contaminate every object that happened to be sitting in it. The law protects the family’s property from its own diagnosis.
The colophon that closes two chapters at once
Four short verses list, by name, every category the last two chapters have covered: the affliction of scaly disease, the scale, scaly disease in a garment, scaly disease in a house, the swelling, the scab, the bright spot. This is not Leviticus 14 summarizing itself. It is summarizing Leviticus 13 AND 14 together (already on these pages), in the order both chapters actually introduced their terms — the single formal colophon for what is, by its own reckoning, one law in two parts.
⚠ And it states its own purpose in one infinitive this project has tracked since the first week of Genesis: ‘to teach’ — or more literally, to CAUSE TO DISTINGUISH — ‘the day it is unclean, and the day it is clean’. Lehavdil, the same verb that first separated light from darkness (Genesis 1:4, already on these pages), was handed to Aaron as the priesthood’s entire job description on the worst day of his life (Leviticus 10:10, already on these pages), and closed Leviticus 11 (already on these pages) as that chapter’s own stated purpose. It closes this one too. A hundred and sixteen verses of skin, fabric and architecture, in the end, all exist to teach one act: telling clean from unclean, the verb creation itself started with.
Notes on this translation
Decisions. Hebrew and English Leviticus 14 both run 1–57 — verified against the Masoretic text, no versification shift. Two Masoretic paragraph breaks divide it: closed after v20, open after v32, with a final open break closing the chapter at v57. ‘The one with scaly disease’ replaces ‘the leper’ throughout, continuing Leviticus 13’s own retirement of that noun. Mayim chayim (vv5, 6, 50, 51, 52) is kept literal as ‘living water’ rather than ‘running’ or ‘fresh’ water — the flagship departure of this chapter, paying off a connection this project’s own John 4 note had already drawn before this chapter existed. ‘Guilt-offering’ is kept for asham, matching Leviticus 5’s established rendering; a log of oil is transliterated rather than converted to a modern volume, since the word belongs to this chapter alone.
Echoes paid. Aaron’s own ordination blood — ear, thumb, big toe — from Leviticus 8:23–24 (already on these pages), run again here on a returning Israelite; the hyssop dipped in blood at the Passover doorposts, Exodus 12:22 (already on these pages); the ‘such as his means suffice for’ concession first made for a poor mother at Leviticus 12:8 (already on these pages); and lehavdil, ‘to distinguish’, tracked since Genesis 1:4 and Aaron’s charge at Leviticus 10:10 (both already on these pages), closing this two-chapter law exactly as it closed Leviticus 11.
Echoes planted. This chapter’s own living water (vv5–6) is the purification this project’s John 4:10 note (already on these pages) named in advance; the released living bird (v7, v53) sets up the more famous goat sent to Azazel in the wilderness at Leviticus 16, now on these pages.
⚠ A note on order: Leviticus stands complete on these pages, chapters 1–27.
