Jehovah orders vengeance on Midian before Moses is gathered to his people. Twelve thousand men, a thousand from each tribe, kill every Midianite male and burn every city — Balaam dies among five slain kings. Moses, furious that the women were spared, orders the killing of every male child and every non-virgin woman; the returning army is quarantined and purified, its captured metal passed through fire and water. The spoil is counted and divided — half to the 12,000 soldiers (taxed 1-in-500 to the priesthood), half to the congregation (taxed 1-in-50 to the Levites) — and the officers, reporting zero casualties, bring an unordered gold gift 'to make atonement for our souls'.
⚠ Undated within the chapter, on the plains of Moab, continuous with the vow law just given — the last narrated military campaign before Moses' death. ⭐ Four Masoretic paragraph breaks (after vv12, 20, 24, and the chapter's own close), the middle three holding the crisis (vv13-18) and its purification (vv19-24) together as one unbroken unit. ⚠ Every number in the war-tax and census checks exactly, in contrast to Numbers 3's uncorrected firstborn surplus.

וַיְדַבֵּר יְהוָה, אֶל-מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר.
And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying:note

נְקֹם, נִקְמַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, מֵאֵת, הַמִּדְיָנִים; אַחַר, תֵּאָסֵף אֶל-עַמֶּיךָ.
Avenge the children of Israel on the Midianites; afterward you shall be gathered to your people.note
Venga a los hijos de Israel de los madianitas; después serás recogido a tu pueblo.

וַיְדַבֵּר מֹשֶׁה אֶל-הָעָם לֵאמֹר, הֵחָלְצוּ מֵאִתְּכֶם אֲנָשִׁים לַצָּבָא; וְיִהְיוּ, עַל-מִדְיָן, לָתֵת נִקְמַת-יְהוָה, בְּמִדְיָן.
And Moses spoke to the people, saying: Arm men from among you for war, and let them go against Midian, to execute Jehovah’s vengeance on Midian.note

And they killed the kings of Midian along with the rest of their slain — Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian; and Balaam son of Beor they killed with the sword.note

And all their cities where they dwelt, and all their encampments, they burned with fire.note

and they brought the captives and the prey and the spoil to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the children of Israel, at the camp, at the plains of Moab which are by the Jordan at Jericho. {S}note

And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the chieftains of the congregation went out to meet them outside the camp.note

וַיִּקְצֹף מֹשֶׁה, עַל פְּקוּדֵי הֶחָיִל, שָׂרֵי הָאֲלָפִים וְשָׂרֵי הַמֵּאוֹת, הַבָּאִים מִצְּבָא הַמִּלְחָמָה.
And Moses was furious with the officers of the army, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, who came from the service of the war.note
Y Moisés se airó contra los oficiales del ejército, los jefes de millares y los jefes de centenas, que venían del servicio de la guerra.

וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם, מֹשֶׁה: הַחִיִּיתֶם, כָּל-נְקֵבָה.
And Moses said to them: Have you let every female live?note
Y Moisés les dijo: ¿Habéis dejado con vida a toda hembra?
16
הֵן הֵנָּה הָיוּ לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, בִּדְבַר בִּלְעָם, לִמְסָר-מַעַל בַּיהוָה, עַל-דְּבַר-פְּעוֹר; וַתְּהִי הַמַּגֵּפָה, בַּעֲדַת יְהוָה.
Look — these are the ones who, by Balaam’s word, caused the children of Israel to break faith with Jehovah in the matter of Peor, so that the plague came upon the congregation of Jehovah.note
He aquí —estas son las que, por palabra de Balaam, hicieron que los hijos de Israel quebrantaran la fe con Jehová en el asunto de Peor, de modo que vino la plaga sobre la congregación de Jehová.

וְעַתָּה, הִרְגוּ כָל-זָכָר בַּטָּף; וְכָל-אִשָּׁה, יֹדַעַת אִישׁ לְמִשְׁכַּב זָכָר--הֲרֹגוּ.
Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man by lying with him.note
Ahora pues, matad a todo varón entre los pequeñuelos, y matad a toda mujer que haya conocido varón durmiendo con él.
18
וְכֹל הַטַּף בַּנָּשִׁים, אֲשֶׁר לֹא-יָדְעוּ מִשְׁכַּב זָכָר--הַחֲיוּ, לָכֶם.
But every girl who has not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.note
Pero a toda niña que no haya conocido varón durmiendo con él, dejadla con vida para vosotros.
19
וְאַתֶּם, חֲנוּ מִחוּץ לַמַּחֲנֶה--שִׁבְעַת יָמִים: כֹּל הֹרֵג נֶפֶשׁ וְכֹל נֹגֵעַ בֶּחָלָל, תִּתְחַטְּאוּ בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי--אַתֶּם, וּשְׁבִיכֶם.
And you — camp outside the camp seven days; whoever has killed a soul, and whoever has touched a slain body, purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, you and your captives.note
Y vosotros, acampad fuera del campamento siete días; todo el que haya matado un alma, y todo el que haya tocado un cadáver, purificaos al tercer día y al séptimo día, vosotros y vuestros cautivos.

וְכָל-בֶּגֶד וְכָל-כְּלִי-עוֹר וְכָל-מַעֲשֵׂה עִזִּים, וְכָל-כְּלִי-עֵץ--תִּתְחַטָּאוּ. {ס}
And every garment, and everything made of skin, and everything made of goats’ hair, and everything made of wood, you shall purify. {S}note

And Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who went into the battle: This is the statute of the law that Jehovah commanded Moses:note

Only the gold, and the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead —note
Ciertamente el oro, y la plata, el bronce, el hierro, el estaño y el plomo —

כָּל-דָּבָר אֲשֶׁר-יָבֹא בָאֵשׁ, תַּעֲבִירוּ בָאֵשׁ וְטָהֵר--אַךְ, בְּמֵי נִדָּה יִתְחַטָּא; וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר לֹא-יָבֹא בָּאֵשׁ, תַּעֲבִירוּ בַמָּיִם.
everything that can withstand fire, you shall pass through fire, and it will be clean; but it must also be purified with the water for impurity. And everything that cannot withstand fire, you shall pass through water.note
todo lo que resiste el fuego, lo haréis pasar por el fuego, y será limpio; pero también deberá purificarse con el agua para la impureza. Y todo lo que no resiste el fuego, lo haréis pasar por agua.

וְכִבַּסְתֶּם בִּגְדֵיכֶם בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי, וּטְהַרְתֶּם; וְאַחַר, תָּבֹאוּ אֶל-הַמַּחֲנֶה. {ס}
And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you will be clean, and afterward you may come into the camp. {S}note
Y lavaréis vuestros vestidos el séptimo día, y quedaréis limpios, y después podréis entrar en el campamento. {S}

וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה, אֶל-מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר.
And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying:note

שָׂא, אֵת רֹאשׁ מַלְקוֹחַ הַשְּׁבִי, בָּאָדָם, וּבַבְּהֵמָה--אַתָּה וְאֶלְעָזָר הַכֹּהֵן, וְרָאשֵׁי אֲבוֹת הָעֵדָה.
Take the count of the captured prey, of the human and of the beast — you, and Eleazar the priest, and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the congregation —note
Toma la cuenta de la presa capturada, del humano y de la bestia —tú, y Eleazar el sacerdote, y los jefes de las casas paternas de la congregación—
27
וְחָצִיתָ, אֶת-הַמַּלְקוֹחַ, בֵּין תֹּפְשֵׂי הַמִּלְחָמָה, הַיֹּצְאִים לַצָּבָא--וּבֵין, כָּל-הָעֵדָה.
and divide the prey into two parts, between those who took hold of the war, who went out to battle, and the whole congregation.note
y dividirás la presa en dos partes, entre los que empuñaron la guerra, los que salieron a la batalla, y toda la congregación.

וַהֲרֵמֹתָ מֶכֶס לַיהוָה, מֵאֵת אַנְשֵׁי הַמִּלְחָמָה הַיֹּצְאִים לַצָּבָא--אֶחָד נֶפֶשׁ, מֵחֲמֵשׁ הַמֵּאוֹת: מִן-הָאָדָם, וּמִן-הַבָּקָר, וּמִן-הַחֲמֹרִים, וּמִן-הַצֹּאן.
And levy a tribute for Jehovah from the men of war who went out to battle — one soul from every five hundred, of the human, and of the cattle, and of the donkeys, and of the flocks.note
Y levantarás un tributo para Jehová de los hombres de guerra que salieron a la batalla —un alma de cada quinientos, del humano, y del ganado, y de los asnos, y de los rebaños.

מִמַּחֲצִיתָם, תִּקָּחוּ; וְנָתַתָּה לְאֶלְעָזָר הַכֹּהֵן, תְּרוּמַת יְהוָה.
Take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest, as Jehovah’s contribution.note
Tómalo de la mitad de ellos, y dáselo a Eleazar el sacerdote, como ofrenda de Jehová.

וּמִמַּחֲצִת בְּנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל תִּקַּח אֶחָד אָחֻז מִן-הַחֲמִשִּׁים, מִן-הָאָדָם מִן-הַבָּקָר מִן-הַחֲמֹרִים וּמִן-הַצֹּאן--מִכָּל-הַבְּהֵמָה; וְנָתַתָּה אֹתָם, לַלְוִיִּם, שֹׁמְרֵי, מִשְׁמֶרֶת מִשְׁכַּן יְהוָה.
And from the children of Israel’s half you shall take one drawn from every fifty, of the human, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the flocks — of all the livestock — and give them to the Levites, who keep charge of the tabernacle of Jehovah.note
Y de la mitad de los hijos de Israel tomarás uno de cada cincuenta, del humano, del ganado, de los asnos y de los rebaños —de todo el ganado—, y los darás a los levitas, que guardan la custodia del tabernáculo de Jehová.

וַיְהִי, הַמַּלְקוֹחַ--יֶתֶר הַבָּז, אֲשֶׁר בָּזְזוּ עַם הַצָּבָא: צֹאן, שֵׁשׁ-מֵאוֹת אֶלֶף וְשִׁבְעִים אֶלֶף--וַחֲמֵשֶׁת אֲלָפִים.
And the prey — the remainder of the plunder that the army had taken — was six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep,note
Y la presa —el resto del botín que el ejército había tomado— fue seiscientas setenta y cinco mil ovejas,

וּבָקָר, שְׁנַיִם וְשִׁבְעִים אָלֶף.
and seventy-two thousand cattle,note

and Jehovah’s tribute of the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five.note

Numbers 31:1-6 — The sentence chapter 27 promised, repeated word for word

⭐⭐ ‘Afterward you shall be gathered to your people’ is not a new line — it is Numbers 27:13’s own sentence, spoken again, verbatim. Numbers 27:12-14 (already on these pages) had Jehovah tell Moses to climb a mountain, look at the promised land, and then be gathered to his people ‘as Aaron your brother was gathered’ — a death sentence delivered as an errand, four chapters ago. Here the identical Hebrew clause, te’asef el-ammekha, opens Moses’s very last commanded campaign: avenge Israel on Midian, THEN be gathered. The whole chapter that follows is framed, before its first battle is fought, as the thing Moses does on the near side of the promise he was already given.

‘Avenge’ and ‘vengeance’ ring three times in vv2-3 — naqam, a root this chapter never once uses of a person’s own grievance. It is Jehovah’s vengeance Moses executes, not Israel’s; see the dictionary entry for the sharper question this raises against Deuteronomy 32:35 (not yet on these pages), where the same root becomes God’s own claimed monopoly.

Twelve thousand men, and the arithmetic is exact before a shot is fired: a thousand from each of the twelve fighting tribes (v4), no more, no fewer, and Levi — who does not fight, Numbers 1:47-49 already on these pages — is not among them. Phinehas goes too, carrying ‘the holy vessels and the trumpets of alarm’ — the same straight silver trumpets Numbers 10 (already on these pages) built for exactly this purpose: ‘you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, and you shall be remembered before Jehovah your God, and you shall be saved from your enemies’ (10:9). ⚠ This is the one campaign in the Torah where the man who ended the Peor plague by his own hand, spear still warm from Numbers 25 (already on these pages), personally leads the army sent to settle the account with the nation whose women started it.

Numbers 31:7-12 — A man who filled three chapters with his own voice is killed in six words

⭐⭐ Balaam’s death, promised by this project’s own Balaam entry since it was written, lands here — and it lands in half a verse. The man who argued with an angel, refused a king’s silver twice, and spoke seven oracles no one commissioned him to speak (Numbers 22-24, already on these pages) is disposed of in the same clause as five kings whose names appear nowhere else in the Bible: ‘Balaam son of Beor they killed with the sword’ (v8). ⚠ Joshua 13:22 (not yet on these pages) remembers this exact death independently, decades later, in an entirely different book — naming him ‘the soothsayer’ and repeating the same three words, ‘with the sword’. The Bible circles back to how this man died twice; it never again lets him speak.

One of the five named kings may be a name this project has already met. Numbers 25:15 (already on these pages) names Cozbi’s father as ‘Zur… a head of a father’s house in Midian’ — a chieftain, not a commoner. This chapter’s Zur is called a melekh, a king, not a rosh beit-av, and Zur is not a rare enough name to prove identity from the name alone — but a Midianite family prominent enough to be named twice, in two chapters six apart, both times over a death, is worth noticing rather than assuming away.

Nothing survives. Every male combatant, every city, every encampment — the totality is stated twice, once for the people (v7) and once for the places (v10), before the chapter even reaches the part it is actually troubled by.

Numbers 31:13-16 — What ‘every male’ did NOT mean

V7 already said ‘they killed every male’ — so what is Moses furious about? The answer is in what v9 reports the army actually did: it ‘took captive the women of Midian and their little ones’, meaning v7’s ‘every male’ was understood by the officers themselves as the fighting men only, not the boys. Moses’s fury (v14, qatsaph, a hot, sudden anger) is at a mercy the army believed it had already been faithful in extending. What he demands at vv17-18 is not a repeat of v7; it widens the killing to a category the battle itself had spared.

V16 is where this project’s Balaam entry’s own promise resolves. That entry, written while translating Numbers 22-24, already carried the citation ‘Numbers 31:16’ as the verse where the gentile seer ‘taught Balak to seduce Israel into idolatry and immorality for a fee’ — a forward claim this translation can now check against its own source. It holds: ‘by Balaam’s word’ is the Hebrew’s own phrase, and it is the ONLY place in the Pentateuch that states outright that Balaam, having failed to curse Israel from outside (Numbers 22-24), advised a second approach from within — the missing hinge between his blessing and Peor’s idolatry (Numbers 25, already on these pages), which never itself names him. ⚠ V16’s own verb, limsor-ma’al, ‘break faith’, gets a revealing split on the shelf: KJV and ASV ‘commit trespass’, a near-legal register; Douay, following the Vulgate, ‘made you transgress’; NWT ‘commit unfaithfulness’, a marital register — the same word-field ma’al already carries at its very first Torah use, the sotah law of a wife who ‘acts unfaithfully’ against her husband (Numbers 5:12, already on these pages). This translation follows the NWT.

Numbers 31:17-18 — The hardest two verses in this book so far

This translation states plainly what the Hebrew states plainly, and does not soften it: Moses orders the killing of every male child among the captives, and every woman who has had sexual intercourse, and the sparing ‘for yourselves’ of every virgin girl. No shelf version disputes the sense; the disagreements are only over which English word carries ‘known a man by lying with him’ most plainly (this translation follows the whole shelf’s consensus reading rather than a euphemism). This is the most morally difficult order any human being gives in the Torah, and it is given by Moses in his own voice, not narrated as something Jehovah spoke directly for this occasion — though he grounds it in v2’s standing command and v16’s indictment of what these same women had already done to Israel at Peor.

‘Keep alive for yourselves’ is not left unlegislated elsewhere in the Torah, even though this chapter says nothing more about what becomes of the girls it spares. Deuteronomy 21:10-14 (not yet on these pages) is the law that governs exactly this situation — a woman taken captive in war whom an Israelite man wants to marry: she is brought into his house, given a full month to mourn her father and mother, and only then may he take her as a wife; if he later has no delight in her, he must let her go free and may not sell her or treat her as property. It is a real legal constraint on what ‘for yourselves’ can mean, written by the same hand that gives this chapter its silence — not a resolution of the discomfort, but a fact worth setting beside it rather than leaving this verse to stand completely alone.

This is a text that has been read as license for exactly the kind of wartime atrocity it describes, and this translation names that honestly rather than arguing it away. What it will not do is invent a comfort the text does not offer, or pretend the difficulty belongs only to ancient readers. The chapter’s own moral seriousness — the purification law that follows in vv19-24, applied to every soldier who has killed — treats the killing as something that leaves a mark on the men who did it, even while commanding it.

Numbers 31:19-24 — The war itself needs purifying, and so does the gold

Every soldier who killed, and every soldier who merely touched a body, is quarantined for a week and washed with the same water for impurity Numbers 19 (already on these pages) built from the ashes of the red cow — the Torah’s standing remedy for corpse-contamination, applied here to an entire returning army at once rather than to an individual mourner. Killing in a war Jehovah himself commanded still counts as contact with death; obedience does not exempt a body from what death does to it.

The metal itself is purified too, and the method splits by what the object can survive. Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, and lead go through FIRE and then the same water; cloth, skin, goat-hair, and wood — anything fire would destroy — go through water alone. This is the Torah’s only law for decontaminating captured property rather than a person, and it treats the two processes, fire and water, as complementary rather than either one sufficing on its own for metal.

Three Masoretic paragraph breaks fall inside this one crisis — after v12 (the army’s arrival, before the confrontation), after v20 (the end of Moses’s own instruction, before Eleazar takes over the fire-and-water law), and after v24 (the end of Eleazar’s speech, before Jehovah opens a new subject at v25). The scribes read vv13-24 — Moses’s fury, his order, and its purification — as one continuous unit, never pausing inside it.

Numbers 31:25-31 — A war-tax with a word no other chapter in the Bible uses

⭐⭐ Mekhes, ‘tribute’, occurs six times in the whole Hebrew Bible, and every one of them is in this chapter (vv28, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41) — searched consonantally across the archived text, it appears nowhere else. It is deliberately NOT the same word as terumah, ‘contribution’, the ordinary priestly-income word this translation has kept since Leviticus 7:32: v29 uses both in one clause — the soldiers’ mekhes, once collected, BECOMES Eleazar’s terumah. One is the specific one-time levy this war produces; the other is the general category it is filed under.

The two halves of the spoil are taxed at ten times different rates, and the lighter rate falls on the men who actually fought. The 12,000 soldiers’ half pays one in five hundred to Eleazar (0.2%); the whole congregation’s half pays one in fifty to the Levites (2%). The army that risked the battle keeps the far lighter rate; those who stayed in camp pay ten times as much per head — the text nowhere explains the ratio, but the direction of the mercy is plain enough on its own.

Numbers 31:32-47 — An arithmetic problem this chapter does NOT have

Every number in this section checks, twice. 675,000 sheep, 72,000 cattle, 61,000 donkeys, and 32,000 human souls split exactly in half (337,500 / 36,000 / 30,500 / 16,000 each); the 1-in-500 levy on the soldiers’ half comes to exactly 675 / 72 / 61 / 32; the 1-in-50 levy on the congregation’s half, though the text does not print the totals a second time, would come to exactly 6,750 / 720 / 610 / 320. Numbers 3 (already on these pages) left this project a real arithmetic problem to report — a 273-man firstborn surplus with no Levite left to redeem it. This chapter, for all the difficulty of what it commands, does its own math perfectly.

‘Human souls’ renders nefesh adam — the same fixed pairing this translation has kept for nefesh (‘soul’, established since Numbers 15, already on these pages) and generic adam (‘the human’) since Genesis 1. The word that opens the Torah’s account of humankind’s own creation is here a counted line item, wedged between donkeys and sheep in a plunder tally. This translation keeps it rather than smoothing it to the more comfortable ‘persons’ the rest of the shelf reads — the discomfort is the Hebrew’s, not an editorial addition.

Numbers 31:48-54 — Zero casualties, and a gift nobody was ordered to bring

⭐⭐ Twelve thousand men fought a war of total destruction, and the officers report ‘not one man of us is missing’ — then bring gold anyway, unasked, ‘to make atonement for our souls’. The mekhes of vv28-30 was commanded; this offering is not — v50’s own verb is volunteered, and the officers name their own reason: killing, even a war with no Israelite loss, is not something a man walks away from clean. This is the third time gold changes hands with God in this project’s Exodus-through-Numbers span, and the three could not be more different: Exodus 32 (already on these pages) has gold torn off under pressure to build a calf; Exodus 35 (already on these pages) has it given freely, unasked, for the tabernacle; here it is given freely, unasked, as atonement for lives taken rather than for anything built.

16,750 shekels is roughly a fifth of the entire tabernacle’s own gold. Exodus 38:24 (already on these pages) totals the whole sanctuary’s gold at ‘twenty-nine talents, and seven hundred and thirty shekels’ — 87,730 shekels, at the standard 3,000-shekel talent. A war fought with no Israelite casualty produces, as an afterthought its own commanders were not told to bring, roughly a fifth as much gold as the entire national sanctuary cost to build.

The five ornaments of v50 are a genuine shelf mess, and this translation does not pretend otherwise. Every version agrees the list is five items of gold jewelry and disagrees on almost every one: this translation’s ‘anklets’ for the first (etzadah) follows NWT ‘ankle chainlets’ and ASV ‘ankle-chains’ against NIV ‘armlets’; ‘bracelets’ for the second (tzamid) matches the same word already fixed at Genesis 24:22. The last word, kumaz, is the real crux — see the dictionary entry for why this translation renders the identical rare word two different ways in its only two occurrences in the whole Hebrew Bible.

Notes on this translation

Decisions. Nefesh is kept as ‘soul’ throughout (vv19, 28, 35, 40, 46), the rendering this project fixed and swept across sixteen earlier verses at Numbers 15 (already on these pages) — including the compound nefesh adam, ‘human souls’, at vv35, 40 and 46. Generic adam is kept as ‘the human’ even inside the plunder-census lists (vv11, 26, 28, 30, 47), the same fixed choice this translation has used since Genesis 1 — a stranger reading here than elsewhere, since it puts the word for humankind's own creation into a list alongside cattle and donkeys, but the discomfort belongs to the Hebrew. Mekhes is kept distinct from terumah as ‘tribute’ against ‘contribution’ (see the Library note and the new dictionary entry). The five ornaments of v50 are rendered ‘anklets and bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and pendants’; the last, kumaz, is rendered differently here than at its only other occurrence in the whole Hebrew Bible — see the dictionary entry for why. ‘Furious’ renders qatsaph at v14, a hotter, more sudden anger than the shelf's usual ‘wroth’ (KJV, ASV). Four Masoretic paragraph breaks — after v12, v20, v24, and the chapter's own close at v54 — and the middle three run together the crisis (vv13-18) and its purification (vv19-24) as one unbroken scribal unit; see the note at vv19-24.

Library. Three new dictionary entries in both languages: naqam, the vengeance this whole chapter executes; mekhes, the war-tribute word confined to this one chapter; and kumaz, the obscure ornament this translation renders two different ways in its only two appearances in the Bible. This chapter links to three already-established entries rather than growing them: chatzotzrah (the trumpets Phinehas carries), terumah (the contribution the tribute becomes), and niddah (the water for impurity, applied here to a whole returning army at once). No new encyclopedia entriesBalaam, Midian, Phinehas, Eleazar, Moab, Peor, and Cozbi all gained this chapter's references instead; the five named kings of v8 are left ungrouped into an entry of their own, on the same principle this project applies to any list where the roll call itself, not any one name, is the point.

Echoes paid — three. Numbers 27:12-14's death sentence on Moses — ‘you too shall be gathered to your people’ — returns verbatim at v2, framing this entire campaign as carried out on the near side of a promise already made. This project's own Balaam entry, written while translating Numbers 22-24, carried a forward citation to ‘Numbers 31:16’ as the verse proving Balaam advised Israel's seduction at Peor; that citation now resolves, and checks out. And Numbers 25's own silence on WHO taught Israel to sin at Peor is filled in at last — v16 is the only place in the Pentateuch that names Balaam as its author.

Patterns worth carrying forward. First: this chapter's own arithmetic is flawless where an earlier census chapter left a real discrepancy on the table (Numbers 3's 273-man firstborn surplus with no Levite to redeem it, already on these pages) — worth remembering that not every large number in this book is a trap, and that this one checks at every step, twice. Second: the hardest material in this book so far arrives with almost no editorial signal from the text itself — no verse pauses to comment on vv17-18 the way the scribes paused before and after them; the moral weight is carried entirely by what the chapter does next, not by anything it says about itself. Third, a method note: the ‘already cited, not yet verified’ class of claim is real even inside this project's own reference apparatus — the Balaam encyclopedia entry's forward citation to this chapter turned out to be accurate, but it had to be checked against the actual Hebrew rather than assumed correct because an earlier session wrote it down.

Echoes planted. Mekhes is flagged for its five further appearances later in this same chapter (vv37-41), all counted here as one word's entire career in the Hebrew Bible. The unresolved question of whether v8's Zur is the same Midianite chieftain named at Numbers 25:15 is left open rather than settled, for a reader who returns to this chapter after meeting Cozbi's father to weigh for themselves.
