In the wilderness of Sinai the redeemed people are counted and arrayed as an army — twelve tribes, twelve chieftains, 603,550 fighting men; and Levi is set apart to carry and guard the tent at the camp's center.
c. 1445 BC — the first day of the SECOND month of the second year, one month after Leviticus and about three weeks before the cloud lifts and Israel marches (Numbers 10:11). Thirteen months out of Egypt, the nation is mustered for the conquest it will not, for lack of faith, actually attempt for another thirty-eight years.

Numbers 1 — The Mister Translation

1

Translator's Notes — verse by verse

Numbers opens with a muster: the redeemed people counted and arrayed as an army for the march to the promised land. A census chapter, so the notes zoom out — the repetition is the point. Quotations from copyrighted versions (NIV, TLB, NWT) are kept to short phrases for comparison; KJV, Geneva, Douay-Rheims and ASV are public domain.

Verses 1–4 · בְּמִדְבַּר bemidbar — "in the wilderness"

The book named "In the wilderness." English calls this book Numbers (Greek Arithmoi, Latin Numeri) for the two great censuses it contains, in chapters 1 and 26. But the Hebrew names it, as always, from its opening words: Bemidbar, "in the wilderness" — and that is the truer title, for this is the book of the forty wilderness years, the generation that left Egypt and, but for two men, died in the desert without seeing the land. It opens with careful bookkeeping and ends in a graveyard.

One month after Leviticus. The date is exact: "the first day of the second month, in the second year." The tabernacle was raised on the first day of the first month of that second year (Exodus 40:17), and all of Leviticus was spoken there; now, one month later, from the same tent of meeting, the voice turns from worship to war. In about three weeks the cloud will lift and Israel will march (Numbers 10:11).

"Lift the head." The idiom for taking a census is se'u et rosh, literally "lift the head" — to count is to raise each face and reckon it. But this is no ordinary head-count: it is a muster. Everyone counted is a male "from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to the tsava" — the host, the army. To paqad, "muster/number," is the same verb by which "Jehovah visited Sarah" with a son (21:1): God's turning of his attention, here turned toward an army. This census is Israel becoming, for the first time, a nation under arms.

Verses 5–16 · נְשִׂיאֵי מַטּוֹת nesi'ei mattot — the chieftains of the tribes

Twelve names, twelve tribes. One nasi — a "chieftain" (KJV "prince," NWT "chieftain"), a lifted-up one — is named from each tribe to stand with Moses. The list quietly solves an arithmetic problem: Levi will be set apart (below), which would leave only eleven fighting tribes — so Joseph is split into his two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh (v. 10), and the twelve hold. Their names are a little sermon in themselves, most of them built on the names of God: Eli-zur "my God is a rock," Zuri-shaddai "my rock is Shaddai," Gamli-el "God is my reward" (the name the Pharisee teacher of Acts 5 would carry), Nethan-el "God has given."

Nahshon of Judah. One name repays watching: Nahshon son of Amminadab, chieftain of Judah (v. 7) — brother-in-law of Aaron, and, the genealogies will show, the great-great-great-grandfather of King David (Ruth 4:20–22) and an ancestor of the Messiah (Matthew 1:4). It is fitting that Judah, Leah's "this time I will praise Jehovah" son, heads the muster and will camp first, on the east; the praise-tribe leads the host. (Jewish tradition remembers Nahshon as the first to step into the Red Sea before it parted.)

The called ones. The chieftains are qeru'ei ha-eda, "the summoned of the congregation" (v. 16; here the scroll's written form qeri'ei is read as qeru'ei, a ketiv/qere pair, both from qara, "to call"). They are "the heads of the alfei Israel" — the clans, or, on the older reading, the "thousands" (see the numbers note); the two senses of eleph sit side by side in one word.

Verses 17–46 · the muster, and the great number — 603,550

The drumbeat is the point. Twelve times the same clause turns over, tribe by tribe: "their generations (toldot), by their clans, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to the army." A modern ear wants it abbreviated; the Hebrew refuses. The repetition is the theology — no tribe is summarized, none ranked above another, each counted with the identical dignity. And it is counted "head by head," le-gulgelotam (KJV "by their polls"), from gulgolet, "skull" — the word that, in Aramaic dress, gives us Golgotha, "the place of the skull." Every skull is numbered and known.

Six hundred thousand — and the promise made countable. The total of fighting men comes to 603,550 (v. 46; the KJV counts it out longhand, "six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty," and writes Judah's 74,600 as "threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred") — implying a whole people of perhaps two million. To Abram, on a night long before, God had said, "Look toward the heavens and count the stars — if you are able to count them… so shall your seed be" (15:5): a seed as uncountable as the stars. Now, at the foot of Sinai, the uncountable has become an army you can number to the fifty. How large, exactly? The figures are famously debated. Taken plainly they give a nation of two million crossing a desert — a wonder sustained by daily manna. Some scholars, noting that the word eleph means both "thousand" and "clan/troop/military-unit," read the totals as (say) so-many units of so-many men, yielding a smaller host; others hold the plain numbers. This translation prints the numbers as the text gives them and flags the honest uncertainty in the word itself — the same eleph that named the chieftains "heads of the clans/thousands" a few verses back.

Verses 47–54 · וְהַלְוִיִּם — the tribe that is not counted

One tribe left off the roll. When the muster is done, a thirteenth tribe stands uncounted: "But the Levites, by their fathers' tribe, were not mustered among them" (v. 47). It is not a slight but a setting-apart. The Levites are appointed — the same verb paqad, now not "muster for war" but "put in charge" (v. 50) — over the tabernacle: they alone carry it, strike it when the camp moves, raise it when the camp halts, minister at it, and camp around it as a living wall. The one tribe exempted from the army is the tribe whose whole warfare is the presence of God.

A wall against wrath. The reason is given starkly: the Levites ring the tent "that there be no qetsef, no wrath, upon the congregation" (v. 53), and "the outsider who draws near shall be put to death" (v. 51; KJV "the stranger that cometh nigh"). Holiness is not safe to approach carelessly; the tabernacle that is Israel's greatest gift is also its greatest danger, and the Levites are the trained guard who keep the people at a saving distance. Note the geography the chapter is quietly drawing: the twelve tribes in their armies on the outside, the Levites in a ring within, and at the dead center the tent where the glory dwells — the whole camp is built around the presence. And the book that will record so much rebellion opens on a perfect note of it: "And the children of Israel did so; according to all that Jehovah commanded Moses, so they did."

Patterns worth carrying forward

Where this translation keeps the words exact / distinct: "muster" for paqad when it counts an army (kept the same verb as God's "visiting" of Sarah, and as the Levites' "appointing" — one root, three turns); "army / host" for tsava; "tribe" for matteh (literally a "staff"); "congregation" for eda, the appointed assembly; "head by head" for le-gulgelotam (the skull-word behind Golgotha); and the numbers printed as the text gives them, with the eleph "thousand/clan" ambiguity flagged rather than silently resolved.

Echoes paid. The tent of meeting still speaking, one month on (Leviticus 1:1); paqad, the verb that "visited" Sarah (21:1), now mustering her descendants; the star-promise to Abram (15:5) made countable in an army of 600,000; Judah the praise-son (29:35) heading the host; and Reuben the firstborn (29:32) counted first though the leadership has passed on. Echo planted: the gulgolet, "skull," that will surface again on a hill called the Place of the Skull.

Next installment in this book: Numbers 2 — the camp arranged around the tent, three tribes to a side under four great standards (Judah east, Reuben south, Ephraim west, Dan north), the order in which they will march.
