וַיְדַבֵּר יְהוָה, אֶל-מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר.

they shall separate themselves from wine and strong drink; they shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, nor drink any juice of grapes, nor eat fresh grapes or dried.

All the days of the vow of their separation, no razor shall come upon their head; until the days are fulfilled for which they separate themselves to Jehovah, they shall be holy — they shall let the locks of the hair of their head grow long.

And if anyone dies very suddenly beside them, and they defile the head of their separation, then they shall shave their head on the day of their cleansing — on the seventh day they shall shave it.

And on the eighth day they shall bring two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, to the priest, to the entrance of the tent of meeting.

And the priest shall offer one for a sin-offering, and one for a burnt offering, and make atonement for them, because they sinned by reason of the dead body; and they shall make their head holy that same day.

and a basket of unleavened bread, cakes of fine flour mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers spread with oil, and their grain-offering, and their drink offerings.

And the priest shall bring them before Jehovah, and shall offer their sin-offering, and their burnt offering.

And the Nazirite shall shave the head of their separation at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and shall take the hair of the head of their separation, and put it on the fire which is under the sacrifice of peace offerings.

And the priest shall take the boiled shoulder from the ram, and one unleavened cake out of the basket, and one unleavened wafer, and put them on the hands of the Nazirite, after they have shaved the head of their separation.

And the priest shall
wave them for a wave offering before Jehovah; it is holy for the priest, together with the breast that is waved and the thigh that is offered; and after that the Nazirite may drink wine.

This is the law of the Nazirite who vows their offering to Jehovah for their separation, besides what else their means can afford; according to the vow which they vow, so they shall do, following the law of their separation.

Numbers 6 meaning — a vow anyone could take, three chapters this project has already promised it would pay off
⚠ The Nazirite vow is voluntary and, by its own terms, temporary — any Israelite, man or woman, could take it for a fixed stretch of time, marked by three restrictions: no wine or anything from the grapevine, no cutting the hair, no contact with a corpse, not even for the closest family (v7). This project's own dictionary entry on nazir already named this chapter as the place its full law would land, and three already-shipped chapters have been quietly waiting on it: Samson's own lifelong vow (Judges 13, not yet on these pages), Hannah's vow over Samuel — 'no razor shall touch his head' (1 Samuel 1:11, already on these pages) — and John the Baptist, 'marked out from the womb like a lifelong Nazirite' (Luke 1:15, already on these pages). All three are LIFELONG versions of a vow this chapter's own law treats as ordinarily temporary — the exception, not the rule, in every case it produces a named figure worth remembering.
A vow interrupted by a stranger's death, not the Nazirite's own choice
V9's scenario is deliberately outside anyone's control: someone simply drops dead nearby, ‘very suddenly,’ and the vow is broken through no fault of the person keeping it. The law does not treat this as a moral failure — there is no punishment, only a reset: shave the head, wait seven days, bring two birds on the eighth, and start the whole count over. ⚠ V12’s closing line is unusually blunt about what this costs: ‘the former days shall be void.’ However long the vow had already run, none of it counts. A Nazirite three weeks from finishing who stands too close to a sudden death starts again from zero.
Finishing the vow costs more than starting it did
The completion ritual (vv13-20) is disproportionate to everything that came before it: three separate animals — a burnt offering, a sin-offering, a peace offering — plus bread, grain, and drink offerings, for a vow whose actual daily requirements were purely negative (no wine, no haircut, no corpses). ⚠ The single strangest instruction in the chapter is v18: the Nazirite shaves the hair grown specifically for this vow and burns it in the fire under the peace-offering sacrifice — the one physical, visible mark of months or years of separation, deliberately destroyed rather than kept, buried, or given any other treatment. The hair was never the point; the vow was, and once the vow is fulfilled the hair has no further status at all.
The oldest surviving words of the Bible, worn as jewelry a thousand years before anyone had a Bible to bind
⚠ In 1979, in a burial cave at Ketef Hinnom just outside Jerusalem's Old City, archaeologist Gabriel Barkay's team found two tiny rolled silver scrolls, inscribed with this exact blessing and dated to roughly 600 BC — before the Babylonian exile, centuries before the Dead Sea Scrolls, the oldest known fragment of biblical text in existence. They were amulets, worn rather than read, unrolled only after three years of careful conservation work; they now sit in the Israel Museum. The blessing itself is built to be felt as much as read: three lines in the Hebrew, each one longer than the last (three words, then five, then seven), each one naming Jehovah as the one who acts and the worshiper as the one blessed — guard, then shine and be gracious (the same root Joseph reaches for over the brother he cannot yet claim, Genesis 43:29, already on these pages, and the root inside the name Hannah, who pledged her own son to this chapter's own Nazirite vow), then lift up his face and grant peace. V27 closes on a claim stronger than the blessing itself: Jehovah puts his own name on the people being blessed, so that the blessing is not the priests' to give — they only speak it; Jehovah is the one who actually does it.
The shelf splits on v26's own idiom for lifted attention. KJV and ASV both keep the older English ‘lift up his countenance upon thee’, a word most modern readers meet nowhere else; NIV reads ‘turn his face toward you’, trading the archaism for a plainer image; NWT keeps the literal body part, ‘lift up his face toward you’, and renders v24’s ‘keep’ as ‘safeguard,’ a stronger English verb for the same Hebrew shamar this project has already tracked as the human's own garden vocation in Eden. This translation follows NWT’s literal face over KJV/ASV’s countenance, on the same reader-test principle guiding every other rendering choice here: a word still alive in ordinary English over one that sends the reader to a dictionary before it sends them to the sense.
Notes on this translation
Decisions. Hebrew and English Numbers 6 both run 1–27 — verified against the Masoretic text, no versification shift. Six Masoretic paragraphs divide it: closed after v23, v24, v25, v26, v27; open after v21. No new dictionary entries this chapter; nazir, neder, panim, and chanan are all reused from earlier chapters (already on these pages), each entry extended with this chapter's own payoff.
Echoes paid. The nazir dictionary entry's own promise (already on these pages) that ‘the full law is in Numbers 6,’ now delivered and linked from Hannah's vow over Samuel and from John the Baptist's own lifelong dedication (both already on these pages); the chanan dictionary entry's own root (already on these pages), first flagged at Joseph's blessing over Benjamin, now doing its most famous work in the Bible's best-known benediction; the panim dictionary entry's own running count of the word's different jobs (already on these pages), gaining a new one here — Jehovah's face turned toward, not away from, the one blessed; and Jeremiah 18-19's own bare citation of this exact blessing (already on these pages), now a real link in both directions, where the withdrawal of Jehovah's face reverses this chapter's own blessing on purpose.
