Translator’s Notes

Verses 1–4 · a doctor writes a Greek preface

The only Gospel that opens like a book. These four verses are a single, balanced, classical Greek sentence — the most polished Greek in the New Testament — the kind of periodic preface a Greek historian or physician would put at the head of a serious work. Then Luke drops it and shifts, from verse 5 on, into the plain Septuagint-flavoured Greek of the Hebrew scriptures. He can write like Thucydides and chooses to write like the Old Testament: the announcement is deliberate. This is the one place in the four Gospels where the author steps forward and speaks as I.

"Most excellent Theophilus." The name means "friend of God" or "loved by God" — possibly a real patron, possibly every reader who loves God. Kratistos ("most excellent") is a form of address for a person of rank; Luke uses it again for the governors Felix and Festus in Acts. He addresses the same Theophilus at the start of Acts (1:1), which is the seam that makes Luke and Acts one two-volume work by one author.

"That you may know the certainty." Asphaleia — firmness, security, the opposite of stumbling. Luke says outright why he is writing: not to move the emotions but to give solid ground under things the reader has already been catechised in (katecheo, the root of "catechism"). He is a careful witness who "followed all things closely from the start," and early tradition names him a physician and a travelling companion of Paul. KJV "the certainty of those things"; the NWT "the certainty."

Verses 5–7 · a barren couple, on purpose

"In the days of Herod." Luke anchors everything in datable history — Herod the Great, the priestly courses, later a Roman census, a named emperor and governor. The story is placed inside the calendar of the world, not in "once upon a time."

The division of Abijah. David split the priests into twenty-four rotating courses (1 Chronicles 24); Abijah's was the eighth. Zechariah is an ordinary rural priest, married to a daughter of Aaron — priestly on both sides. Both are called "righteous" and "blameless," which makes their childlessness a grief, not a punishment.

⚠ Barren and advanced in years. The words are chosen to make the reader hear the old stories: Sarah and Abraham, Rebekah, Rachel, Hannah, the Shunammite. Israel's whole history begins with wombs God opens against the odds. Luke's Gospel opens the same way — and then, one chapter later, will out-do all of them with a womb that needs no man at all.

Verses 8–10 · the lot of a lifetime

The lot fell to him. With so many priests, burning the incense in the sanctuary was a once-in-a-lifetime honour assigned by lot; most priests never drew it. Zechariah is at the single greatest moment of his priestly life — alone in the holy place, at the hour of incense, the smoke standing for the prayers of the people — when the answer to his own long-abandoned prayer walks up beside the altar.

The people praying outside. The whole crowd is at prayer in the courts while the priest is within; the gospel's first scene is a congregation waiting outside a closed door for a man who is taking too long.

Verses 11–17 · a second Elijah

Never wine or strong drink. John is marked out from the womb like a lifelong Nazirite (Numbers 6) — the vow of Samson and Samuel — and "filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother's womb," which verse 41 will show literally when he leaps at Mary's voice.

"In the spirit and power of Elijah." The angel closes by quoting Malachi — the last verse of the last prophet: "he will turn the hearts of fathers to children" (Malachi 4:5–6). Malachi promised Elijah before the great day of the Lord; Gabriel says the promise is now walking toward its fulfilment. John is not Elijah returned in body, but Elijah's role and clothing and fire, sent to "make ready a people prepared." The four-hundred-year silence since Malachi ends with a sentence of Malachi.

Verses 18–20 · the priest who could not believe

⚠ "By what shall I know this?" Watch this line, because Luke means you to hold it against Mary's question in verse 34. Zechariah, the righteous priest who has spent his life at the altar, asks for a proof and is silenced for his unbelief. Mary, an unmarried girl in a nowhere town, asks only how, and is answered and blessed. The learned man of religion doubts; the young woman believes. Luke's Gospel keeps making that reversal, and it starts here, in the temple, with a mute priest.

"I am Gabriel, who stands before God." The same angel who came to Daniel with the timetable of the end (Daniel 8–9) now comes to time the beginning. The silence is both a punishment and a sign: Zechariah asked for a sign, and became one.

Verses 21–25 · the taking away of a disgrace

"To take away my disgrace." Oneidos — reproach, shame. Childlessness was read as a reproach a woman carried in public; Elizabeth's five months of hiding are the quiet of someone scarcely daring to believe. Her words echo Rachel's at the birth of Joseph, "God has taken away my reproach" (Genesis 30:23) — another closed womb opened, another child who would save a family and a nation.

Verses 26–33 · favoured one

⚠ "Rejoice, favoured one" — the words behind the "Hail Mary." Kecharitomene is a perfect passive participle of charitoo, from charis, grace/favour: "one who has been graced, favoured." The old Latin rendered it gratia plena, "full of grace," which the "Hail Mary" carries — but the Greek says she is one who has received favour, not one who is a reservoir of it to dispense. The verse names her the object of God's kindness, and verse 30 spells it plainly: "you have found favour with God," the same thing said of Noah. This translation keeps the plain sense and flags the famous crux rather than smuggling a doctrine into a participle. KJV "highly favoured"; the ESV and NWT "favored one."

The throne of David, and no end. Gabriel folds the covenant to David (2 Samuel 7) into the message: an heir on David's throne over the house of Jacob, a kingdom "with no end." It is the oldest royal promise in Israel, delivered to a girl in Nazareth.

Verses 34–38 · the overshadowing, and the fiat

"Since I do not know a man." A plain statement of virginity — parthenos, virgin, from verse 27. Her question is not Zechariah's demand for proof; it is a real "how," and it is answered.

"Will overshadow you." Episkiazo — the verb the Greek Old Testament uses for the cloud of glory that "overshadowed" the tabernacle so that the presence of God filled it (Exodus 40:35). The same shadow that once filled the tent now falls on a woman; she becomes the place where God dwells.

⚠ "No word will be impossible with God." Almost exactly the sentence the visitor spoke to Sarah at the oaks of Mamre — "Is anything too wondrous for Jehovah?" (Genesis 18:14, as this translation renders it) — where the same word, rhema, can mean both "word" and "thing." Luke ties the newest birth to the oldest.

"The bondslave of the Lord." Doule — a female slave, the strongest word for it. Mary answers not with resignation but with a soldier's assent: "may it happen to me according to your word." The whole scene turns on it, and where Zechariah was struck dumb, Mary's yes becomes, twelve verses later, a song.

Verses 39–45 · the leap in the womb

The baby leaped. Skirtao — to leap, skip; the Greek Old Testament uses it for the children struggling in Rebekah's womb (Genesis 25:22). Unborn John recognises unborn Jesus and jumps; the forerunner is already going ahead, before either is born. Elizabeth, filled with the Spirit, is the first human being in this Gospel to confess who Mary carries: "the mother of my Lord."

"Happy is she who believed." Makaria — the beatitude word, "happy, blessed." Elizabeth blesses Mary not for her womb but for her faith — and the line lands like a verdict on the whole chapter, because it is exactly what Zechariah failed to do. Belief, not biology, is what she is called happy for.

Verses 46–55 · the Magnificat

Mary's song. Named the Magnificat from its first Latin word, "magnifies." It is built almost entirely out of the Old Testament, and above all out of Hannah's song at the birth of Samuel (1 Samuel 2:1–10) — another poor woman whose God-given child would turn a nation. Mary sings in the past tense, as though the reversal is already done.

"The low estate of his bondslave." Tapeinosis — lowliness, humiliation. God's regard falls on the lowly, and the song then names the reversal in six hammer-strokes: the proud scattered, rulers pulled off thrones, the lowly lifted, the hungry filled, the rich sent away empty. It is the most politically dangerous poem in the Gospels, and it is sung by a teenage girl. "All generations will call me happy" (makarizo) — the same root as verse 45.

"To Abraham and to his seed forever." The song ends where the promises began: mercy remembered, the oath to Abraham kept. What God is doing is not a new departure but the ancient covenant coming due.

Verses 56–58 · a mercy magnified

"The Lord had magnified his mercy toward her." The verb is the same root as the Magnificat's opening — Mary sang that her soul magnifies the Lord, and now the neighbours say the Lord has magnified his mercy for Elizabeth. The joy the angel promised in verse 14 arrives on schedule.

Verses 59–66 · the naming, and the loosened tongue

"No — he shall be called John." On the eighth day, at the circumcision, the neighbours assume the boy takes his father's name; both parents refuse, insisting on the name the angel gave — John, "the Lord is gracious." Zechariah, still mute, writes it on a tablet, and the moment his obedience matches Elizabeth's, his tongue is freed. The sign given for his doubt is lifted the instant he acts on faith; his first freed word is a blessing of God. The whole hill country senses that a hand is on this child.

Verses 67–79 · the Benedictus — the priest sings back

Zechariah's prophecy. Named the Benedictus, "blessed." The priest who was silenced for unbelief is now filled with the Spirit and opens with praise; his song, like Mary's, is woven from covenant promises — the "horn of salvation" in the house of David (a horn is an OT image of strength, Psalm 132:17), the oath sworn to Abraham, deliverance to serve God "without fear."

⚠ "The dawn from on high." Anatole is a deliberate double word: it means both the rising of the sun and, in the Greek Old Testament, the messianic "Branch" — the shoot promised to sprout from David (Jeremiah 23:5; Zechariah 3:8; 6:12). Zechariah's ears would hear both: a light dawning and a Branch springing. It shines "on those sitting in darkness and the shadow of death," Isaiah's own words (Isaiah 9:2). KJV "the dayspring from on high"; the ESV "the sunrise"; the NWT "a daybreak." Each catches half of a word that carries both.

The child addressed. Zechariah turns and speaks to his eight-day-old son (verse 76): "you will go on ahead before the Lord to prepare his ways." The Elijah role Gabriel named in verse 17 is now spoken over the boy by his own father.

Verse 80 · and then, silence again

"He was in the wilderness until the day of his public showing." With one sentence Luke hides John for thirty years. The forerunner grows up in the desert — the same wilderness where prophets were made — and the curtain falls on him until it rises again in chapter 3, at the Jordan, "the word of God came to John." The song is sung; now comes the long waiting.

Patterns worth carrying forward

Where this translation keeps the exact / distinct words:most excellent” for kratistos and “certainty” for asphaleia, keeping the historian’s register of the preface; “favoured one” for kecharitomene, one who has received favour, not a container of it; “bondslave” for doule, the strongest word, kept for both Mary’s yes and her song; “overshadow” for episkiazo, the tabernacle-cloud verb; “happy” for makaria/makarizo, the beatitude word, kept the same in Elizabeth’s blessing and Mary’s song; and “the dawn from on high” for anatole, following the rising-light sense while the note keeps the “Branch” that rides underneath it.

Echoes paid. A barren, aged, righteous couple set against Sarah, Hannah, and every opened womb in Israel; Malachi’s last promise of Elijah (Malachi 4:5–6) quoted over John; “no word will be impossible with God” carried straight from Sarah at Mamre (Genesis 18:14); the Magnificat built on Hannah’s song (1 Samuel 2); the Benedictus on the oath to Abraham and the “Branch” of Jeremiah and Zechariah; and Isaiah’s “those sitting in darkness” (Isaiah 9:2) lit at the end.

Echoes planted. The doubting priest and the believing girl, a reversal the whole Gospel will keep making; the Holy Spirit, poured on Elizabeth, Mary, and Zechariah before a single miracle — Luke’s signature; the Magnificat’s reversal (the lowly lifted, the rich sent away empty), waiting to be paid in the Beatitudes and the woes of chapter 6; the leaping forerunner, going ahead of Jesus before birth as he will at the Jordan; and John hidden “in the wilderness,” the curtain that rises again in chapter 3.

Next in this book: Luke 2 — a decree from Caesar Augustus, a census, a birth in Bethlehem with no room in the inn, shepherds and a sky full of angels, the child presented in the temple to old Simeon and the prophetess Anna, and the one glimpse of Jesus as a boy, left behind in his Father’s house.
