Two related holiness laws. First, who may eat the priestly portions of Israel's offerings: a priest in any state of ritual uncleanness is barred until purified, an outsider or hired worker may never eat them, but a slave bought with the priest's own money and a widowed or divorced, childless priest's daughter returned to her father's house both may. Second, what animal qualifies as an offering at all: tamim, without blemish, spelled out for the first time in the same physical detail chapter 21 already used to disqualify a priest from the altar. A newborn animal waits eight days before it is eligible; a mother and her young may not be slaughtered on the same day.
⚠ Undated within the chapter, like the rest of Leviticus. Its restitution formula (v14) restates Leviticus 5:16's rule verbatim; its blemish list (vv17-25) finally gives full legal content to tamim, the standard fixed at Leviticus 1:3, and closely parallels Leviticus 21's own mum list disqualifying a priest. Still inside the same Sinai window as the rest of this block (Exodus 40:17 / Numbers 1:1, already on these pages).

Leviticus 22 — The Mister Translation

1
Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying:note
Jehová habló a Moisés, diciendo:
2
Speak to Aaron and to his sons, that they treat the holy things of the children of Israel with care, which they dedicate to me, and not profane my holy name: I am Jehovah.note
Say to them: Throughout your generations, any man of all your offspring who approaches the holy things that the children of Israel dedicate to Jehovah, while his uncleanness is upon him, that soul shall be cut off from before me: I am Jehovah.note
Any man of the offspring of Aaron who has a scaly disease or a discharge shall not eat of the holy things until he is clean. And whoever touches anyone unclean by a corpse, or a man who has an emission of semen, note
or whoever touches any swarming creature by which he may become unclean, or a person by whom he may become unclean, whatever his uncleanness may be —note
the person who touches any such thing shall be unclean until evening, and shall not eat of the holy things unless he bathes his body in water.note
When the sun sets he shall be clean, and afterward he may eat of the holy things, because it is his food.note
He shall not eat what dies on its own or what is torn by wild animals, defiling himself with it: I am Jehovah.note
They shall keep my charge, so that they do not bear sin for it and die because of it, by profaning it: I am Jehovah, who sanctifies them.note
No outsider shall eat of the holy thing; a priest's tenant or hired worker shall not eat of the holy thing.note
But if a priest buys a person, purchased with his money, that person may eat of it; and those born in his house may eat of his food.note
And if a priest's daughter is married to an outsider, she shall not eat of the contribution of the holy things.note
But if a priest's daughter is a widow or divorced, and has no child, and returns to her father's house as in her youth, she may eat of her father's food; but no outsider shall eat of it.note
And if a man eats of the holy thing by mistake, he shall add a fifth of its value to it, and give the holy thing to the priest.note

Leviticus 22 meaning — why a priest could be barred from his own dinner

The holy things at stake here (vv1–9) are the priestly portions of offerings — a priest's actual food, not an abstraction — and this chapter makes plain that priestly status alone does not grant access to them. A priest carrying tzaraat, a discharge, corpse-contact, or any of the standard sources of uncleanness this book has tracked since Leviticus 11 (already on these pages) is barred from his own table until evening and a wash restore him. The rule runs in one direction only: uncleanness excludes a priest from holy food, but the office itself never overrides the body's own state.

Who counts as household — a bought slave included, a hired worker excluded

V10's zar, ‘outsider,’ names a different category than ger, the resident foreigner this book protects at length elsewhere (Leviticus 19:33–34, already on these pages) — zar simply means anyone outside the priestly household, with no bearing on citizenship or origin. KJV and ASV both read ‘stranger,’ the same English word both versions also use for ger elsewhere, quietly erasing a distinction the Hebrew keeps; NIV's ‘anyone outside a priest's family’ states the sense directly rather than translating the word. ⚠ V11 draws the eating-line by HOUSEHOLD MEMBERSHIP, not employment: a hired worker, paid wages, may not eat the holy portions, while a slave purchased with the priest's own money may — property status, oddly, counting as closer kinship than a wage contract. This translation states the law as written rather than softening what it plainly says.

V13's widowed or divorced priest's daughter, childless, ‘returns to her father's house as in her youth’ — and regains a right the marriage had suspended, not one it permanently forfeited. Marriage to an outsider (v12) removes her eating rights only for as long as that marriage, or its children, last.

Eating holy food by accident — the identical restitution formula from three chapters back

V14's restitution — the value of what was eaten, plus a fifth, paid to the priest — is the exact formula already fixed at Leviticus 5:16 (already on these pages) for sinning against a holy thing through error. The chapter does not invent a new penalty; it applies an already-established one to a new case.

Tamim and mum — the animal law that gives an old word its full content

This is where two threads this project has tracked separately finally meet. Tamim, ‘without blemish,’ has been the Torah's standard for sacrificial animals since its very first appearance at Leviticus 1:3 (already on these pages) — but that chapter never spelled out what disqualifies an animal from the standard. This chapter does: blind, broken, maimed, a wart, a festering rash, a scab, a limb too long or short, crushed or torn testicles (vv22–24) — and the list runs remarkably close to Leviticus 21:18–20's own mum list disqualifying a PRIEST from the altar, two chapters earlier. The same physical standard of wholeness, applied first to the men who serve and now to the animals they offer — tamim is what mum is not.

⚠ V24's closing clause — ‘you shall not do this in your own land’ — is the chapter's one moment of address beyond the altar itself: not just a rule for what may be offered, but a claim about what may be done to an animal at all, inside Israel's own borders.

The eighth day again, and a rare law of animal compassion

V27's eight-day wait before a newborn animal may be offered is this project's third encounter with the number: Abraham's covenant sign falls on the eighth day (Genesis 17:12, already on these pages), and the healed man's readmission rite completes on the eighth day (Leviticus 14, already on these pages) — a newborn animal, like a newborn child, is given a full week before anything is required of it.

V28's ban on slaughtering a mother animal and her young on the same day sits beside, without quite matching, Exodus 23:19's ‘you shall not boil a young goat in its mother's milk’ (already on these pages) — two distinct laws, adjacent in spirit if not in wording, both refusing to let a mother's death and her offspring's fate collapse into the same moment.

A thanksgiving offering that cannot be saved for later

The chapter's closing law (vv29–30) requires a todah, thanksgiving offering, to be eaten the same day it is sacrificed — no leftovers held until morning, the identical same-day urgency this project has already met in other offerings' own eating windows. Gratitude, this law implies, is not a stockpile; it is used up, deliberately, before the day ends. The chapter then closes (vv31–33) on the same three words that opened it and so much of this book besides: I am Jehovah, the one who brought you out of Egypt to be your God — the whole holiness code's own stated grounds, restated one final time.

Notes on this translation

Decisions. Hebrew and English Leviticus 22 both run 1–33 — verified against the Masoretic text, no versification shift. Three Masoretic paragraphs divide it: open after v16, closed after v25, open after v33. Zar, ‘outsider,’ is newly entered, distinguished carefully from the already-established ger. Tamim and mum are both already-established terms this chapter finally gives full legal content.

Echoes paid. Leviticus 11's own clean/unclean framework (already on these pages), governing which priests may eat holy food; Leviticus 5:16's restitution formula (already on these pages), reapplied here verbatim; Leviticus 1:3's tamim (already on these pages) and Leviticus 21:18–20's mum (already on these pages), finally meeting in one chapter's own detailed blemish list; Genesis 17:12's eighth day (already on these pages), now the newborn animal's own waiting period; and Exodus 23:19's mother-and-kid law (already on these pages), standing beside this chapter's own mother-and-young law.

⚠ A note on order: Leviticus stands complete on these pages, chapters 1–27.
