In Hebrew, Mizraim — also the 'son' of Ham whose name IS the country (10:6,13). Abram goes down in famine (12:10) and his stay runs the Exodus pattern in miniature: danger, plagues, 'send away,' wealth out. ⭐ Deuteronomy 23:8 (already on these pages) is the law's verdict on the house of slavery, and it is not the one a reader expects: you shall not abhor an Egyptian, for you were a stranger in his land — and his grandchildren may enter the assembly of Jehovah. The memory that protects the stranger in Israel is turned around to protect the people who housed Israel first. ⭐ Deuteronomy 26:5–8 (already on these pages) is the creed every farmer recited over his firstfruits, and Egypt is its middle: he went down to Egypt and sojourned there, few in number … and Jehovah brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand — the country named as the place a family became a nation and the place it was taken out of, in one breath.
