1
Y Jehová habló a Moisés, diciendo:
2
Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: I am Jehovah your God.
note
You must not do as they do in the land of
Egypt, where you lived; and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you; and you must not walk in their statutes.
note
You shall carry out my ordinances and keep my statutes, to walk in them: I am Jehovah your God.
note
5
וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם אֶת-חֻקֹּתַי וְאֶת-מִשְׁפָּטַי, אֲשֶׁר יַעֲשֶׂה אֹתָם הָאָדָם וָחַי בָּהֶם: אֲנִי, יְהוָה. {ס}
You shall keep my statutes and my ordinances — the one who does them will live by them: I am Jehovah.
{ס}note
Guardaréis mis estatutos y mis ordenanzas —el que los cumpla vivirá por ellos: Yo soy Jehová. {ס}
6
אִישׁ אִישׁ אֶל-כָּל-שְׁאֵר בְּשָׂרוֹ, לֹא תִקְרְבוּ לְגַלּוֹת עֶרְוָה: אֲנִי, יְהוָה. {ס}
None of you shall approach anyone who is his own close relative, to uncover their
nakedness: I am Jehovah.
{ס}note
{ס}
7
עֶרְוַת אָבִיךָ וְעֶרְוַת אִמְּךָ, לֹא תְגַלֵּה: אִמְּךָ הִוא, לֹא תְגַלֶּה עֶרְוָתָהּ. {ס}
The nakedness of your father, and the nakedness of your mother, you shall not uncover: she is your mother; you shall not uncover her nakedness.
{ס}note
La desnudez de tu padre, y la desnudez de tu madre, no descubrirás: tu madre es, no descubrirás su desnudez. {ס}
8
עֶרְוַת אֵשֶׁת-אָבִיךָ, לֹא תְגַלֵּה: עֶרְוַת אָבִיךָ, הִוא. {ס}
The nakedness of your father's wife you shall not uncover: it is your father's nakedness.
{ס}note
La desnudez de la mujer de tu padre no descubrirás: es la desnudez de tu padre. {ס}
9
עֶרְוַת אֲחוֹתְךָ בַת-אָבִיךָ, אוֹ בַת-אִמֶּךָ, מוֹלֶדֶת בַּיִת, אוֹ מוֹלֶדֶת חוּץ--לֹא תְגַלֶּה, עֶרְוָתָן. {ס}
The nakedness of your sister, your father's daughter or your mother's daughter, whether born at home or born elsewhere — you shall not uncover their nakedness.
{ס}note
La desnudez de tu hermana, hija de tu padre o hija de tu madre, nacida en casa o nacida fuera —no descubrirás su desnudez. {ס}
10
עֶרְוַת בַּת-בִּנְךָ אוֹ בַת-בִּתְּךָ, לֹא תְגַלֶּה עֶרְוָתָן: כִּי עֶרְוָתְךָ, הֵנָּה. {ס}
The nakedness of your son's daughter, or of your daughter's daughter — you shall not uncover their nakedness, for theirs is your own nakedness.
{ס}note
La desnudez de la hija de tu hijo, o de la hija de tu hija —no descubrirás su desnudez, porque es tu propia desnudez. {ס}
11
עֶרְוַת בַּת-אֵשֶׁת אָבִיךָ מוֹלֶדֶת אָבִיךָ, אֲחוֹתְךָ הִוא--לֹא תְגַלֶּה, עֶרְוָתָהּ. {ס}
The nakedness of your father's wife's daughter, begotten by your father — she is your sister — you shall not uncover her nakedness.
{ס}note
La desnudez de la hija de la mujer de tu padre, engendrada por tu padre —es tu hermana—, no descubrirás su desnudez. {ס}
12
עֶרְוַת אֲחוֹת-אָבִיךָ, לֹא תְגַלֵּה: שְׁאֵר אָבִיךָ, הִוא. {ס}
You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father's sister: she is your father's close relative.
{ס}note
No descubrirás la desnudez de la hermana de tu padre: es parienta cercana de tu padre. {ס}
13
עֶרְוַת אֲחוֹת-אִמְּךָ, לֹא תְגַלֵּה: כִּי-שְׁאֵר אִמְּךָ, הִוא. {ס}
You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother's sister: for she is your mother's close relative.
{ס}note
No descubrirás la desnudez de la hermana de tu madre: porque es parienta cercana de tu madre. {ס}
14
עֶרְוַת אֲחִי-אָבִיךָ, לֹא תְגַלֵּה: אֶל-אִשְׁתּוֹ לֹא תִקְרָב, דֹּדָתְךָ הִוא. {ס}
You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father's brother — you shall not approach his wife: she is your aunt.
{ס}note
No descubrirás la desnudez del hermano de tu padre —no te acercarás a su mujer: es tu tía. {ס}
15
עֶרְוַת כַּלָּתְךָ, לֹא תְגַלֵּה: אֵשֶׁת בִּנְךָ הִוא, לֹא תְגַלֶּה עֶרְוָתָהּ. {ס}
You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law: she is your son's wife; you shall not uncover her nakedness.
{ס}note
No descubrirás la desnudez de tu nuera: es la mujer de tu hijo; no descubrirás su desnudez. {ס}
16
עֶרְוַת אֵשֶׁת-אָחִיךָ, לֹא תְגַלֵּה: עֶרְוַת אָחִיךָ, הִוא. {ס}
You shall not uncover the nakedness of your brother's wife: it is your brother's nakedness.
{ס}note
No descubrirás la desnudez de la mujer de tu hermano: es la desnudez de tu hermano. {ס}
17
You shall not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter; you shall not take her son's daughter, or her daughter's daughter, to uncover her nakedness — they are close relatives; it is
depravity.
note
And you shall not take a woman as a rival to her sister, to uncover her nakedness alongside the other, in her lifetime.
note
And you shall not lie carnally with your neighbor's wife, defiling yourself with her.
note
You shall not give any of your offspring to make it pass to
Molech, and you shall not profane the name of your God: I am Jehovah.
note
You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a woman: it is an
abomination.
note
And you shall not lie with any animal, defiling yourself with it; and a woman shall not stand before an animal to mate with it: it is a
perversion.
note
Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, for the nations that I am driving out before you defiled themselves in all these ways.
note
And the land became defiled, and I visited its iniquity upon it, and the land vomited out its inhabitants.
note
But you shall keep my statutes and my ordinances, and you shall not do any of these abominations, whether native-born or the foreigner who lives among you —
note
for the men of the land who were before you did all these abominations, and the land became defiled —
note
so that the land does not vomit you out too, when you defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you.
note
For whoever does any of these abominations — the souls that do them shall be cut off from among their people.
note
30
וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם אֶת-מִשְׁמַרְתִּי, לְבִלְתִּי עֲשׂוֹת מֵחֻקּוֹת הַתּוֹעֵבֹת אֲשֶׁר נַעֲשׂוּ לִפְנֵיכֶם, וְלֹא תִטַּמְּאוּ, בָּהֶם: אֲנִי, יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם. {פ}
Therefore you shall keep my charge, not to do any of these abominable customs that were done before you, and you shall not defile yourselves by them: I am Jehovah your God.
{פ}note
Leviticus 18 meaning — the law that names its own alternative: Egypt and Canaan
This chapter opens not with an abstract ethic but a boundary: ‘you must not do as they do in the land of Egypt… and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan’ (v3), naming Israel's own recent past and imminent future as the two cultures this law sets it apart from. Everything that follows is framed as a definition of that boundary, not a general treatise.
V5’s ‘the one who does them will live by them’ becomes, centuries later, one of the single most argued-over sentences in the whole Bible — quoted directly by Paul at both Romans 10:5 and Galatians 3:12 (neither yet on these pages) as the very definition of law-righteousness he sets against faith, and echoed at Ezekiel 20:11 and Nehemiah 9:29 (neither yet on these pages). An administrative-sounding clause, buried in a chapter's own introduction, becomes a load-bearing verse for the entire law/faith argument of the New Testament.
Leviticus 18's incest laws — why the Masoretic text gives each one its own paragraph
⚠ A structural fact worth naming plainly: vv5–16 each carry their OWN one-verse setumah break — twelve consecutive paragraphs, one per prohibition, found nowhere else in this book. The scribal tradition itself refuses to let these blur into a single list; each forbidden relationship stands alone on the page, exactly as each genealogical name in earlier chapters stood alone rather than running together. ‘Uncover the nakedness of’ (gilah ervah) is the chapter's own fixed formula, kept essentially literal here as across the whole shelf — a well-understood idiom needing no softening.
Ervah returns here to its literal home. This project's own Genesis 42 note (already on these pages) already defined ervah as ‘the word for shameful exposure, used of a body,’ met there only in its figurative extension — ‘the nakedness of the LAND.’ This chapter is where the word's literal, primary sense actually lives. And Genesis 9's own note on Ham (already on these pages) already flagged that ‘saw his father's nakedness’ carries, for some readers, ‘the darker idiom that phrase carries in Leviticus 20’ — worth being precise here: Ham's verb was ra'ah, ‘to see’; this chapter's own operative verb is gilah, ‘to uncover.’ Related, not identical — which is exactly why ancient and modern readers have split on how far Ham's own act should be read.
V18's ban on marrying two sisters as rivals is a law Jacob himself (already on these pages) never kept, since it did not yet exist in his lifetime — the same honest gap this project has already flagged for Amram and Jochebed's marriage (Exodus 6, already on these pages). This exact catalog, restated with prescribed penalties rather than bare prohibition, recurs at Leviticus 20 (already on these pages).
Niddah again — the rule Leviticus 15 already gave, folded into this catalog
V19 restates, in one clause, what Leviticus 15:24 (already on these pages) already legislated at length: intercourse during niddah is off-limits. Nothing new is added here except placement — this chapter is a catalog of relationships and unions, and the point of including it is that this restriction belongs on the same list as everything around it, not that it needs re-explaining.
Molech meaning — child sacrifice, and the ordinary sin named right beside it
Adultery (v20) gets one plain clause before the chapter turns, without any change in register, to child sacrifice (v21) — the two sit side by side in the text with no signal that one is a lesser wrong than the other. ⚠ This verse alone never says ‘through the fire’ — that specific detail comes from parallel texts, not this one: Jeremiah 19 (already on these pages) describes Topheth in the Valley of Hinnom in exactly those terms, and 2 Kings 23:10 and Jeremiah 32:35 (neither yet on these pages) will state it explicitly. This project's own Molech encyclopedia entry (already on these pages) covers the god's identity and the Milcom/Malcam naming tangle in full.
Leviticus 18:22 — what the Hebrew says, and the debate this project doesn't adjudicate
The base translation here is not seriously disputed across the shelf: KJV, ASV, NIV, and NWT all render the clause essentially as this translation does — ‘lie with a male as with a woman.’ Unlike Azazel or the sons-of-God passages, the disagreement here is not over what the Hebrew says but over how the verse should be read and applied today, a question this project has already stated its policy on: this project's own arsenokoitēs entry (already on these pages) — the rare Greek compound Paul very probably minted from this exact clause's own Greek translation — states plainly that ‘the library reports the philology and the spread of renderings and does not adjudicate the modern application, which turns on questions well beyond the lexicon.’ The same policy applies here, at the verse that compound was built from.
To'evah, ‘abomination,’ is not a word reserved uniquely for this one act: this same chapter uses it as its own umbrella term for the entire catalog — incest, adultery, child sacrifice, and the bestiality of the verse immediately following are all called to'evah together at vv26, 27, 29, and 30. Whatever the word signals, this chapter does not single this act out with a harsher vocabulary than it uses for the rest of its own list.
⚠ The whole chapter frames itself (v3) as a boundary against named neighboring cultures' ‘doings,’ not a general treatise on love, desire, or orientation — categories genuinely foreign to the text's own ancient conceptual world. Naming that anachronism is not an argument for any modern position; it is simply what honesty about the text requires.
The land vomited out its inhabitants — a warning aimed at Israel itself
The chapter closes on a violent, physical image — the land itself as an agent that ‘vomited out’ (vataki) its own inhabitants (v25, v28) — and then, deliberately, refuses to let Israel stand outside the warning: ‘so that the land does not vomit YOU out too’ (v28), the identical verb turned back on the very people receiving this law. Native-born and foreigner alike (v26) face the same standard; the text names no exemption by identity, only by conduct. It closes, as so much of this book does, on karet, ‘cut off from among their people’ — and on the same three words that opened it: I am Jehovah.
Notes on this translation
Decisions. Hebrew and English Leviticus 18 both run 1–30 — verified against the Masoretic text, no versification shift. Structurally unusual even for this book: vv5–16 each carry their own one-verse setumah break (twelve in a row), then vv17–30 run as one long unbroken unit closed by a single open break at v30. ‘Nakedness’ (ervah) gets its own dictionary entry here, its literal home after Genesis 42's figurative borrowing. ‘Depravity’ (zimah, v17) and ‘perversion’ (tevel, v23) are each entered separately from the chapter's own umbrella term to'evah, ‘abomination’ — three distinct Hebrew words this translation keeps distinct rather than flattening into one English word. V22 is translated according to the shelf's own broad consensus on the Hebrew; the note there states this project's policy on the verse's modern application directly, matching the policy already fixed at this project's arsenokoitēs entry.
Echoes paid. Genesis 42's figurative ‘nakedness of the land’ (already on these pages), now met in its literal home; Genesis 9's own flag that Ham's act echoes ‘the darker idiom’ of this book's incest laws (already on these pages), now precisely distinguished by verb; Jacob's own marriage to two sisters (Genesis 29, already on these pages), a law not yet given in his lifetime; Leviticus 15's niddah rule (already on these pages), restated here in one clause; and this project's own arsenokoitēs dictionary entry (already on these pages), whose stated policy on v22's modern application this chapter's own note now matches.
Echoes planted. Romans 10:5 and Galatians 3:12 (neither yet on these pages), where Paul quotes v5 directly as the definition of law-righteousness; and 2 Kings 23:10 / Jeremiah 32:35 (neither yet on these pages), which will state outright the ‘through the fire’ detail this chapter's own Molech verse leaves unsaid. Leviticus 20 (already on these pages) restates this whole catalog with prescribed penalties, as promised above.
⚠ A note on order: Leviticus stands complete on these pages, chapters 1–27.
