A date this precise pins the whole chapter to a single year: 605 BC. The fourth year of Jehoiakim was, in the same breath, the first year of Nebuchadrezzar — the year of Carchemish, when Egypt's army broke and Babylon became the region's undisputed power. Jeremiah dates almost nothing else in the book this exactly; this chapter wants the reader doing arithmetic from the first verse.

Jeremiah audits his own career. Verse 3 counts back to 1:2's own dating — “the thirteenth year of Josiah” — and does the subtraction for the reader: twenty-three years of “rising up early and speaking,” the same idiom used twice more of the whole line of prophets Jehovah sent (v4). Two decades of the identical message, met with the identical refrain, three times in seven verses: “you have not listened.”

The offer itself (vv5–6) restates the same three moves as every prophetic sermon before it — turn from evil ways, stay off other gods, and the land stays yours “from age to age” — not because Jeremiah has run out of things to say, but because the charge in this chapter is precisely that the message never needed to be new. Twenty-three years of a constant offer is what makes v9's sentence a judgment and not a surprise.

“My servant.” Verse 9 calls Nebuchadrezzar — a foreign, pagan king, actively about to destroy Jehovah's own city — avdi, “my servant,” the same possessive title given elsewhere to Moses and David. KJV/ASV/NWT all keep it plain; none soften it. The claim underneath the whole chapter is that Babylon's army is not outside Jehovah's control but is, however briefly and however against its own knowledge, an instrument inside it.

“I will devote them to destruction” (vahaḥaramtim) is the same root, the same concept, as the ban laid on Canaanite cities generations earlier — a category this book has until now reserved for conquest, now turned outward onto the nations themselves, Judah included. The chapter does not soften the word to make the reversal easier to read.

V10's catalogue of silenced sounds — joy, gladness, a bridegroom's voice, a bride's voice, the ordinary grinding of household millstones, a lamp still lit at night — names peacetime by what a besieged or emptied town no longer has. Every item is domestic, not military; the chapter measures the disaster in the smallest possible units.

⚠ The seventy years (vv11–12) is the single most-cited number in the rest of the book, and beyond it. Jeremiah 29:10, already on these pages, restates it word for word. The prophecy is treated as an accounting entry come due at Ezra 1:1, and the angel of Zechariah 1:12 asks “how long” with these same seventy years nearly spent. Whether the span is counted from 605 (this chapter's own date) to 539 (Babylon's fall) or from 586 (the temple's destruction) to 516 (the second temple's completion) is a real, open question this translation does not settle — both spans land close to seventy, and the text never specifies which terminus it means.

The cup is handed to a real map, not an abstraction. Egypt, Uz (Job's own country), the five Philistine cities, Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre and Sidon, the Arabian tribes, Elam and Media — a roster that runs from Judah's nearest neighbors out to powers on the far edge of the known world. Judah drinks first (v18), not last — whatever this cup is, it starts at home.

“All the mixed peoples” (vv20, 24) is a plain, common phrase for a mixed or foreign population living among a settled one — the same idea, though not necessarily the identical occurrence, as the “great mixed multitude” that left Egypt with Israel at Exodus 12:38. Even the outsiders who attached themselves to other nations are handed the same cup.

⚠ “The king of Sheshach” (v26) is Babylon itself, in code. Run the Hebrew alphabet in reverse — aleph swaps with tav, bet with shin, and so on, a device called ATBASH — and Sheshach (sh-sh-k) unscrambles to Bavel (b-b-l), “Babylon.” The list has just spent nine verses handing every nation on earth a cup of judgment for Jehovah, and the very last name on it, hidden inside a cipher, is the nation about to serve as the sentence's own executioner. This is not the only place the book does this — it happens again, more famously, at 51:41, not yet on these pages.

V30 opens with the exact words Amos used a century and a half earlier. “Jehovah roars from Zion, and gives his voice from Jerusalem” (Amos 1:2) becomes here “Jehovah roars from on high… raises his voice from his holy habitation” — the identical verb pair, aimed now at the whole earth instead of Israel's immediate neighbors. Whether this is a deliberate quotation or two prophets independently reaching for the same available image for a divine verdict, the text does not say; either way, the roar that once opened a shorter, more local book of judgment reopens here at a far larger scale.

The shepherds get their sentence at last. “Wail, you shepherds” (v34) answers 23:1–4's “woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the flock” almost verse for verse — the same officials-as-kings image, the same charge, now given its actual sentence rather than a warning.

⚠ Two real difficulties, reported rather than smoothed. V34's “the days of your slaughter and your scattering” renders a construction the shelf splits on — KJV/ASV keep “dispersions” as a second noun paired with “slaughter”; NIV abandons the word altogether and reads the following image as “you will fall like the best of the rams” instead of “a precious vessel.” And v38's “because of the fierceness of” a Hebrew word usually read as a form of ‘to oppress’ is a rare enough construction that KJV's “the oppressing sword” supplies a noun (“sword”) the verse itself does not contain, borrowed from how the same phrase reads elsewhere in the book. This translation keeps the more literal, less certain reading in both places rather than importing the smoother one.
