Numbers 29:1-6 — A new year the text never calls one

⚠ ‘A day of blowing’ (v1) names a sound, not an instrument — teru'ah alone, with no word here for trumpet or horn. The whole shelf supplies one anyway: KJV and Geneva both ‘blowing THE trumpets’, ASV ‘blowing OF trumpets’, NIV ‘sound the trumpets’, Douay ‘the sounding and of trumpets’, and both RV60 («sonar las trompetas») and NVI («toque de trompetas») in Spanish. This translation follows Leviticus 23:24's own established choice and keeps ‘blowing’ bare, matching the Hebrew rather than the shelf's unanimous gloss.

And nowhere in this verse, nor in its parallel at Leviticus 23:24-25 (already on these pages), does the text call this day a new year. ⚠ That title is later: Exodus 12:2 (already on these pages) already named a DIFFERENT month ‘the first for you of the months of the year’ — Nisan, six months off from this one. The day this chapter marks becomes ‘Rosh Hashanah’ only in later tradition; the Torah's own calendar starts its year in spring, not here.

⭐ And because the first of any month is by definition a new moon, this single day is stacked three offerings deep: this day's own bull-and-seven-lambs (vv2-5), plus the new moon's own offering from Numbers 28:11-15 (already on these pages), plus the continual daily offering underneath both. V6 names all three in one breath. The additive grammar Numbers 28 established — every occasion layers on, nothing replaces — reaches its deepest stack of the whole two-chapter calendar on its very first day.

Numbers 29:7-11 — Three different things called ‘the Day of Atonement’

This is the third Torah passage to legislate the tenth of the seventh month, and each supplies something the other two don't. Leviticus 16 (already on these pages) gives the high priest's own elaborate ritual — his personal bull, the congregation's two goats, one sent to Azazel; Leviticus 23:26-32 (already on these pages) gives the date, the fast, and the death penalty for ignoring either, with no animal count at all. ⚠ This chapter gives the one thing neither of the others does: the tabernacle-calendar headcount — one young bull, one ram, seven lambs, one goat.

⭐⭐ And v11 shows its work. The goat here is offered ‘besides the sin-offering of atonement’ — chattat ha-kippurim, naming Leviticus 16's own ritual by its technical name and explicitly stacking on top of it, not replacing or duplicating it. Where Leviticus 23 disagreed with Numbers 28's own count for the Feast of Weeks with no comment at all, this chapter is self-aware about the seam — naming the other ritual instead of silently sitting beside it.

The command itself is to afflict your souls — the same phrase Leviticus 16 and 23 both use, never the ordinary Hebrew word for fasting. This is that idiom's third appearance in the Torah.

Numbers 29:12-16 — Tabernacles opens with the calendar's single biggest day

⭐ Thirteen young bulls, two rams, fourteen lambs, one goat — more bulls in one day than any other offering in either this chapter or Numbers 28 names, and six and a half times the New Moon's own two (28:11). ⚠ The feast itself runs seven days, matching Unleavened Bread's own seven (28:17) — the year's two great pilgrim festivals sharing a length the New Year and the Day of Atonement, both single days, don't.

Numbers 29:17-34 — One bull fewer each day, for seven days

⭐⭐ Every day of the feast holds two rams and fourteen lambs constant and drops exactly one bull. Thirteen, twelve, eleven, ten, nine, eight, seven — checked verse by verse, nothing else in the count moves; this is a single, isolated variable, not a general shrinking. Add the seven daily totals and they come to exactly seventy bulls across the week.

⭐ That number has a name. Tractate Sukkah (55b) records Rabbi Elazar asking outright what the seventy bulls of Sukkot correspond to, and answering himself: keneged shivim umot — ‘against the seventy nations’, offered, in that reading, to atone for the whole world rather than Israel alone. ⭐ Genesis 10 (already on these pages) is where that count comes from — ‘seventy nations (the traditional count) descending from three brothers’ — so the same number the Table of Nations uses to draw all humanity as one family is the number this chapter spends a week's worth of bulls on. ⚠ This translation reports the reading as a rabbinic one, centuries after the text, not as this chapter's own stated purpose — the verses themselves give no reason for the count at all.

Numbers 29:35-38 — The eighth day, uncoupled from the seven

⭐ The feast is seven days (v12); this is an eighth, named separately — a solemn assembly. ⚠ The shelf splits on how separate: KJV, Douay and ASV all just ‘a solemn assembly’, but NIV makes the reading explicit — ‘a closing special assembly’ — folding the eighth day back into the feast it names apart from. This translation keeps it unqualified, since the text gives the day its own verse, its own name, and its own offering, and doesn't call it a close. And that offering breaks from the whole week before it: back down to one bull, one ram, seven lambs — a drop from the seven bulls of the day directly before it (v32), and from thirteen at the week's own opening (v13).

⚠ Checked against v2, that count is not merely smaller — it is identical. One bull, one ram, seven lambs, one goat: the eighth day's offering matches the New Year's, verse for verse, animal for animal. The month that opened on a day of blowing closes on the same count it began with.

Numbers 29:39 — A floor, not a ceiling

The two-chapter calendar that began at Numbers 28:1 closes here, and its last verse says plainly what it always was: the minimum the nation owes, not a limit on what any Israelite could still bring. ‘Besides your vows and your freewill-offerings… and your peace-offerings’ — every voluntary category this book has already named stays open on top of everything just prescribed. Two chapters of fixed national obligation end by making room for what obligation can't require.

⚠ And this verse is where the Hebrew chapter itself ends — a real seam, not a rounding choice. The very next sentence in the Masoretic text, ‘And Moses told the children of Israel according to all that Jehovah commanded Moses’, carries its own paragraph break and opens a NEW chapter, Numbers 30, under its own heading, Parashat Mattot. The English shelf checked here (NWT) instead counts that identical sentence as this chapter's v40, so its own Numbers 30 begins one verse later and runs sixteen verses to the Hebrew's seventeen — the same class of chapter-boundary shift already found at Exodus 21/22. This translation keeps the Masoretic break at v39 and will take up that sentence as Numbers 30's own opening word.
