and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and Korah, when that company died, when the fire ate up the two hundred and fifty men; and they became a sign.

Numbers 26:1-4 — ‘After the plague’: the book counts its people a second time
⭐ This chapter is why the book is called Numbers, and it is the second half of a frame. Numbers 1 counted a generation at Sinai; this one counts their children on the plains of Moab, thirty-eight years and one wilderness later, in the same words — from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to the army. ⚠ Between the two counts the entire first list has died, which the last two verses of this chapter say outright. Everything in between is what happened in the gap.
Read the first four words and notice who is missing. The census is taken by Moses and Eleazar — not Moses and Aaron, as at Sinai. Aaron died on Mount Hor in Numbers 20, and the chapter registers the succession without comment by simply using the new name. ⭐ v64 then puts the two pairs side by side deliberately: Moses and Eleazar here, Moses and Aaron the priest there, in one sentence.
⚠ ‘After the plague’ (v1) is doing bookkeeping. The plague is Numbers 25:9’s twenty-four thousand, and the census that follows is the first count taken after it. The TLB makes the causal link explicit where the Hebrew only juxtaposes; KJV, ASV, Geneva and both Reina-Valeras keep the bare ‘after the plague’. This translation keeps it bare too: the text sets a death-toll and a head-count next to each other and lets the reader do the arithmetic.
Numbers 26:5-51 — Twelve lists, three interruptions, and a nation the same size as when it started
The clan formula is a drumbeat and this translation keeps it. Of X, the clan of the Xites, the root 94 times over, with a Masoretic paragraph break after each tribe — fourteen of them in the chapter. ⚠ Smoothing the repetition would be editing: the monotony is the form, and it is what makes the three interruptions land.
⭐⭐ The first interruption is three Hebrew words long and eleven psalms depend on it. After recounting how the earth swallowed Dathan and Abiram with Korah, v11 adds: u-venei Qorach lo metu — and the sons of Korah did not die. Three words, and the Masoretes gave them their own paragraph break, which is what a scribe does with a sentence he does not want run together with the one before it. ⭐ Searched across the archived text, eleven psalms carry the heading ‘of the sons of Korah’ — Psalms 42, 44-49, 84-85, 87-88. A line inserted into a census list to prevent a misunderstanding is the reason a body of temple poetry has an author. ⚠ The shelf hears the sentence two ways, and the difference matters: KJV, ASV and both Reina-Valeras read that the sons did not DIE, while the NIV reads that the LINE ‘did not die out’ and the Douay restructures it into ‘when Core perished, his sons did not perish’. Geneva adds a word the Hebrew does not have — ‘ALL the sons of Korah died not’.
⚠ The second interruption is a death notice inside a birth list. V19 records that Er and Onan died in Canaan — two names that appear in the roll of Judah’s sons and then are immediately cancelled. A census counts the living; the compiler has kept the dead in the list and marked them.
⭐ The third is five women in a list of men. V33 stops to say that Zelophehad had no sons, and then names all five daughters — Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, Tirzah. ⚠ Nothing is explained here; the reason this belongs in a land-allotment census is two chapters away, when they come and ask for their father’s share. Two of the names have afterlives: Tirzah becomes a city and then a royal seat of the northern kingdom (1 Kings 16:8, 23), and Noah is a trap for English readers — her name is No’ah, spelled with different consonants from Noach, the man with the ark. ⭐ Every English version prints ‘Noah’ for both and loses the distinction; the Spanish shelf keeps it by accident of transliteration, printing «Noa» here (RV 1909, RV60, NVI) against «Noé» for the ark-builder. A rare case of the Spanish shelf preserving something the English one cannot.
⭐⭐ And now the numbers, which are the chapter’s real argument. Set the two censuses side by side and the totals barely move: 603,550 at Sinai, 601,730 on the plains of Moab — a net loss of 1,820, under a third of one per cent, across thirty-eight years in which an entire adult generation died. ⚠ But the movement inside the total is violent. Simeon falls from 59,300 to 22,200, a loss of 37,100 — nearly two-thirds of the tribe, and by far the largest change in either direction; the chapter does not say why, and Numbers 25:14 has just named a Simeonite chief as the man Phinehas killed. Manasseh runs the other way, 32,200 to 52,700, a gain of 20,500. ⭐ That reversal has a pedigree: Genesis 48:14-20 has Jacob cross his hands to put the younger Ephraim ahead of Manasseh and ‘set Ephraim before Manasseh’ — and here Manasseh ends 20,200 ahead of a brother who has himself dropped 8,000. Naphtali drops by exactly 8,000 too, which is a coincidence the text does not remark on and neither will this note.
Numbers 26:52-56 — Divide it by size; divide it by lot; do both
⭐ Three verses give two rules for dividing the land and they do not obviously agree. V54 says the larger tribe gets the larger inheritance and the smaller the smaller — allocation by MEASUREMENT. V55 says only, by lot shall the land be apportioned — allocation by CHANCE. V56 then puts them in one sentence: by the mouth of the lot, between the many and the few. ⚠ The tension is real and old; the usual reconstruction is that the lot fixed WHERE each tribe landed and the head-count fixed HOW MUCH, which the Hebrew permits without stating.
‘By the mouth of the lot’ (v56) is what the Hebrew actually says. Al-pi ha-goral — the lot has a mouth, and the land is divided according to what it says. Most of the shelf renders the idiom rather than the image (KJV ‘according to the lot’, NIV ‘by lot’, NVI «por sorteo»); the ASV keeps ‘according to the lot’ as well. Mister prints the mouth, because a chapter this concerned with counting is worth watching at the moment it hands the decision to something that cannot count.
⚠ And notice what the census has just become. Up to v51 it is a muster roll — everyone who goes out to the army. From v52 it is a property register: the same numbers, read for a different purpose. The TLB and NWT 1984 both make the inheritance sense plain; the older shelf leaves the shift for the reader to notice.
Numbers 26:57-62 — The tribe that is counted separately, and the woman named in the middle of it
The Levites are counted apart and by a different rule. Every other tribe is counted from twenty years old and upward, for the army; Levi is counted from a month old, and the number is 23,000. ⚠ V62 gives the reason plainly: they were not counted among the children of Israel because no inheritance was given them among the children of Israel. A tribe with no land does not need a share, so it is not on this roll — it is on a different one.
⭐ And then the list stops to name a woman. V59: Amram’s wife was Jochebed daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt, and she bore Aaron, Moses and Miriam. ⚠ This is the only place in the Torah that gives Moses’ mother a name AND a lineage in one sentence — Exodus 6:20 names her; here she is placed in a generation and a country. The clause ‘who was born to Levi in Egypt’ is doing genealogical work that the rest of the verse then complicates, since it makes her Amram’s aunt; the text states the relationship without comment and this translation does the same.
⚠ V61 is the chapter’s fourth interruption and it is the same move as v11 and v19: a list of Aaron’s four sons, immediately followed by the note that two of them died bringing strange fire. ⭐ Four times now the census has stopped to record a death or a survival that the count alone would hide — Korah’s sons living, Er and Onan dead, Zelophehad’s daughters standing in for a missing son, Nadab and Abihu dead. A roll of the living keeps interrupting itself to say who is not on it and why.
Numbers 26:63-65 — The sentence the whole book has been building toward
⭐⭐ These three verses are the point of the census and, arguably, of the book. Among all those counted here there was not one man who had been counted at Sinai — because Jehovah had said they would die in the wilderness, and they had. ⚠ The chapter has spent sixty verses adding up a nation, and the last three explain that the exercise is a demonstration: the arithmetic is how you can tell the sentence of Numbers 14 was carried out.
⭐ Two names are exempted, and they are the two who brought back the minority report. Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun — the two of the twelve scouts in Numbers 13 who said the land could be taken. Numbers 14:30 had named them as the exceptions in advance; this verse is the receipt. ⚠ The whole shelf keeps both names and the exception intact (KJV, ASV, Geneva, Douay, NIV, NWT 1984, RV 1909, RV60, NVI, TNM 1987) — there is nothing to arbitrate here, and after four chapters of contested words it is worth saying when a verse is simply clear.
⚠ One name is quietly absent from the exemption. Moses counted the first list and he is counting this one, and v65 does not put him among the survivors of it. Numbers 20:12 had already ruled him out of the land; the census does not repeat the sentence, it just declines to include him in the reprieve.
Notes on this translation
Decisions. Hebrew and English agree on 65 verses. Mishpachah is ‘clan’ throughout, the rendering this project has used since Numbers 1 — a clan is a subdivision of a tribe, and ‘family’ in modern English is a household. ⚠ The clan formula is kept as a drumbeat rather than varied for readability: of X, the clan of the Xites, with the root appearing 94 times. Trimming it would be editing, and the monotony is what makes the four interruptions land. ⭐ ‘By the mouth of the lot’ at v56 keeps an image the shelf renders as an idiom. The numbers are printed as digits rather than the shelf’s spelled-out forms, because this chapter is an argument made of arithmetic and the reader needs to be able to compare figures at a glance. Fourteen Masoretic paragraph breaks punctuate the chapter, one after each tribal total — and one of them, unusually, falls after a three-word sentence: v11.
Library. One new dictionary entry in both languages: mishpachah, the clan-word this chapter is built out of; goral, the lot, gained its first Spanish edition and this chapter’s reference. Four new encyclopedia entries: Zelophehad, whose five daughters are named here and who will matter twice more before the book ends; Jochebed, Moses’ mother, placed here in a generation and a country; Tirzah, a daughter in this list and later a royal seat; and Serah, the daughter of Asher, who is named in a roll of sons in three verses of the whole Bible. Korah, Caleb, Joshua and Eleazar gained this chapter’s references.
Echoes paid — five. Numbers 25 planted this census as the count of a generation that had just lost twenty-four thousand, and predicted it would find Simeon the most reduced tribe; it does — 59,300 down to 22,200, and this chapter is where that claim is settled by arithmetic rather than asserted. Numbers 1 is the other half of the frame. Numbers 14’s sentence on the wilderness generation is what vv63-65 report as carried out, and Numbers 13’s two dissenting scouts are the two names exempted. And Numbers 20:12’s ruling against Moses is why he is not among them.
Patterns worth carrying forward. First: a list chapter hides its findings in its interruptions. Four times the roll stops to record something the count alone would conceal — Korah’s sons living, Er and Onan dead, five daughters standing where a son should be, Nadab and Abihu dead. ⭐ The three-word one at v11 is the largest of them by consequence: eleven psalms are headed ‘of the sons of Korah’. Second: the arithmetic is the argument. The two censuses differ by 1,820 out of 603,550 — under a third of one per cent — while Simeon loses two-thirds of its men and Manasseh gains two-thirds again, reversing the order Jacob set in Genesis 48. A total that barely moves is concealing enormous movement, and only the comparison shows it. Third, and a translator’s note: the Spanish shelf here preserves a distinction the English one cannot — Zelophehad’s daughter Noah is a different Hebrew name from Noah of the ark, and Spanish keeps «Noa» apart from «Noé» where every English version prints one word for both.
Echoes planted. Numbers 27 (now on these pages), where Zelophehad’s five daughters come and stand before Moses and ask for their father’s inheritance, and the law is changed for them — and where Joshua is commissioned; Numbers 36 (not yet), which comes back and qualifies that ruling; and Joshua 14-19 (not yet), where the double rule of vv54-56 is actually carried out, lot and measurement together.
