SEPTEMBER 19, 2026 The Chairman Retires, the Advice Doesn't Warren Buffett, 96, stepped down Friday as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, a title he'd held since 1970, handing it to his son Howard while Greg Abel keeps running the company day to day. The job change is mostly a formality eight months after Buffett already gave up the CEO seat. The advice he leaves behind isn't a formality, and I think it deserves a harder look than it usually gets — buy the S&P 500, he's told ordinary investors for decades, and a chunk of that instruction is really an instruction to buy about ten companies.
