The Same Box, a Lot More Inside

Apple's new Mac Studio starts shipping September 22, 2026, built around two new chips — M5 Max and M5 Ultra — with up to 512GB of unified memory, Thunderbolt 5, and a starting price of $2,499 that hasn't moved from the previous generation. I went looking for a redesign, because I'd assumed one was coming; the more interesting fact is that there isn't one, and what's inside the same case is the bigger story.

Same Case, Really the Same

The enclosure is unchanged: 7.7 inches square, 3.7 inches tall, the same aluminum unibody Apple's shipped since the Mac Studio launched in 2023. Apple calls it a "signature compact design" in its own announcement, and for once that's not marketing gloss over a redesign in disguise — reviewers who've had early units confirm the dimensions are identical down to the tenth of an inch. Everything new is inside it.

What's Actually New

M5 Max is an 18-core CPU (6 efficiency plus 12 performance cores) with up to a 40-core GPU, up to 128GB of unified memory, and memory bandwidth of 614GB/s — up from 546GB/s on last year's M4 Max. Apple's own comparisons against the M4 Max version put GPU performance up to 50% faster, LLM prompt processing up to 3.9x faster, and text-to-image generation up to 3.5x faster, alongside gains in video editing and — a genuinely odd one to see in a hardware announcement — DNA-sequencing basecalling, up to 1.9x faster.

M5 Ultra is the more interesting jump, because there wasn't an M4 Ultra to compare it to — Apple skipped that generation of the Ultra chip entirely, so this is the first Ultra update since the M3 Ultra in 2025. It tops out at a 36-core CPU, an 80-core GPU (the first Ultra chip with Apple's newer Neural Accelerators built in), up to 512GB of unified memory, and 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth. Against the M3 Ultra it skipped over, Apple claims up to 4x faster LLM prompt processing and up to 4.3x faster image generation. It starts at $5,499, and the 512GB configuration — of either chip — doesn't actually ship until "late October," a few weeks behind everything else.

Both versions add Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 to the Mac Studio for the first time, and move to Thunderbolt 5 — up to six ports, 120Gb/s each — with support for up to eight displays off one machine.

Why no case redesign matters more than it sounds. A chip that runs meaningfully cooler or more efficiently is usually what lets a laptop get thinner. Apple didn't shrink the Mac Studio's case — it used the same thermal headroom to fit a bigger jump in memory bandwidth and GPU core count instead. That's a different trade than the one a redesign would have made, and for a desktop machine meant to sit on a desk and be pushed hard, it's arguably the better one.

Where I Could Be Wrong

I haven't used one — this is built from Apple's own announcement and the specs sheets, not hands-on testing, and Apple's own performance percentages are Apple's to verify against, not independently benchmarked yet as I write this. The DNA-sequencing and Nuke/Redshift comparisons in particular are workload-specific best cases, the kind of number a vendor picks because it's the biggest one they have, not necessarily what a typical buyer will see day to day.
