Joshua 1The book of the crossing opens on the worst possible news — "Moses my servant is dead" — and refuses to let it stop anything: rise, cross the Jordan. Three times Joshua is told to be strong and resolute, and the courage he most needs turns out to be for keeping the scroll, not the sword. Then rations, a marching order, an old promise called in, and the people handing the charge back: "only be strong and resolute."Joshua 6Jericho, shut up tight against Israel, falls to a war plan with no battle in it: march around the walled city once a day for six days behind the ark and seven trumpets of rams' horns, say nothing, and on the seventh day march around seven times and shout. The walls fall flat, the city and everything in it is devoted to destruction, and one household is spared by name — Rahab, the prostitute who hid the spies, whose scarlet cord is still in the window. Joshua closes the chapter with a curse on whoever rebuilds Jericho — a curse the book of Kings will report, by name, coming true.
