SEPTEMBER 23, 2026 Do Calcium and Vitamin D Supplements Actually Prevent Fractures and Falls? A BMJ systematic review of 69 randomised trials and 153,902 adults found calcium alone, vitamin D alone, and the two combined all produced little to no meaningful reduction in fractures or falls. One combination did clear statistical significance — but missed the review's own bar for a clinically meaningful benefit, and the signal traces largely to a single 1992 French nursing-home trial. Here is what the numbers say, outcome by outcome, and why "statistically significant" and "worth taking" turned out to be two different questions.
