The second of the three lookouts Balak walks his hired prophet to in Numbers 23, after Bamoth-baal and before Peor. ⭐ The name means the field of the WATCHERS — tsophim, from the verb to keep watch or look out — which is a peculiarly apt address for a man brought there to look at something, and no version on either shelf translates it; all of them transliterate, as this one does. It lies on Pisgah, and its exact spot is unrecoverable: it is named once in the Bible and never again. ⚠ Balak’s reason for the move (v13) is that from here Balaam will see only the EDGE of Israel and not the whole camp — a theory that a curse is a matter of aim, held by a king who has just been told twice that it is a matter of dictation.
