The town Adam is located by at Joshua 3:16 (now on these pages) — ‘the city that is beside Zarethan’ — so evidently the better-known of the two in the narrator’s day. Spelled this way it stands in two verses of the Hebrew Bible: that one, and 1 Kings 7:46 (not yet on these pages), where Solomon has the temple’s bronze cast ‘in the clay ground of the Jordan, between Succoth and Zarethan’ — the same stretch of valley, and a clay bank that fits the crossing story’s landslide. 1 Kings 4:12 spells it with a final he, and 2 Chronicles 4:17 calls the foundry site Zeredah. ⚠ Its exact site is not known; the two usual candidates are both mounds on the east side of the valley. The Greek Bible replaces it, at Joshua 3:16, with Kiriath-jearim, a town in the hills of Judah that cannot be meant. Not the Zererah of Judges 7:22, which some editors have wanted to correct to it.
