Zadok and Abiathar

The two priestly houses of David's reign, and in 1 Kings 1 they end up on opposite sides. ABIATHAR is the sole survivor of Saul's massacre of the priests at Nob, who fled to David in the wilderness and carried the ark for him ever since — the old comrade, and he backs Adonijah. ZADOK appears without such a history and is aligned with the Jerusalem establishment; he anoints Solomon at Gihon. In chapter 2 Abiathar is stripped of the priesthood and banished to Anathoth, and Zadok's line holds the high priesthood from then on — the 'sons of Zadok' whom Ezekiel's temple vision names as the only legitimate priests, and from whose name the party of the Sadducees is usually derived.
