the land of Uz

Job's homeland, and genuinely unlocated. Two families of evidence pull in different directions: Lamentations 4:21 addresses 'daughter of Edom, dwelling in the land of Uz' and Job's friend Eliphaz is a Temanite (Teman is in Edom), which points SOUTH-EAST of the Dead Sea; but Uz is also a name in the Aramean line of Genesis 10:23 and 22:21, which points NORTH-EAST toward Syria. The Greek translation adds a note placing Job 'on the borders of Idumea and Arabia.' The book itself gives no coordinates and does not care: its point is a man outside Israel, in no particular place, so that the question can be asked without a national answer. ⚠ No pin is offered on the atlas, on the same principle as Eden — a guessed location is worse than an admitted blank.
