Both a man and a district. TEMAN is a grandson of Esau — the son of Eliphaz, listed among the chiefs of Edom (Genesis 36:11, 15) — and his clan gives its name to a region of Edom, apparently in the north, which becomes a byword for wisdom: 'is there no longer wisdom in Teman?' (Jeremiah 49:7). ⚠ Job's first and most confident friend, Eliphaz, is 'the TEMANITE', so the book of Job situates its conventional wisdom in Edomite country. Amos pairs it with Bozrah as the target of the fire (1:12), and Habakkuk 3:3 has God himself coming 'from Teman'.
