‘Burning’ — tav‘erah, from the verb ba‘ar, to burn, and the place is named for what happened there rather than for anything that was there before. Numbers 11:3 (already on these pages) supplies the whole story in one verse: fire from Jehovah burned among the people at the edge of the camp, Moses prayed, the fire sank, and the spot was called Burning. ⚠ It is one of the most thinly attested places in the Hebrew Bible — the name stands in exactly two verses, that one and Deuteronomy 9:22 (already on these pages), where Moses lists it first among three place-names offered as evidence that Israel had been provoking God all along. ⚠ It is absent from the itinerary of Numbers 33, which lists forty-two camps and does not include this one, so its position in the march is not fixed even relative to the other stations; the atlas coordinate is marked approximate for that reason and should not be read as a proposal.
