The Samaritan town of John 4 — 'a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob gave to his son Joseph.' The whole chapter happens here, and the setting is doing work: it sits in the valley between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim, and Gerizim is the mountain the woman means when she says 'our fathers worshipped on THIS mountain' (4:20). Usually identified with the village of Askar on the lower slope of Ebal, a few hundred metres from Jacob's well; a minority view reads Sychar as a variant of Shechem itself, which lies just to the west. ⚠ Coordinates take Askar and are marked approximate.
