Sosthenes

Named as the co-sender of 1 Corinthians — 'Sosthenes the brother'. ⚠ Luke names a Sosthenes as the synagogue ruler at Corinth who was seized and beaten in front of the tribunal while the proconsul Gallio pointedly declined to intervene (Acts 18:17). If the two are the same man — the name is not rare, so this is a probability rather than a fact — then the second synagogue official in Corinth to join Paul is co-signing the letter, and the congregation would have caught the reference at once. Paul offers no explanation, which is his habit with names his readers already know.
