A stretch of desert on the Israelites' route between ELIM and Sinai (Exodus 16:1), reached on the fifteenth day of the second month after leaving Egypt — where the people first grumble for food and receive quail and manna. ⚠ Its Hebrew name, Sin, is a place name of unknown origin, unrelated in sound or meaning to the English word for wrongdoing; the resemblance is a coincidence of translation only, and it is a different word entirely from the SINAI it borders. Its exact route is uncertain, like most of the wilderness itineraries — the traditional path runs along the peninsula's western coastal plain — and it is named again only once more, as a stage the people recall passing (Numbers 33:11-12).
