The older of the two great Phoenician seaports, some 40 km (25 miles) up the coast from Tyre, and in Genesis 10:15 the FIRSTBORN of Canaan — making 'Sidon' both a city and, in the Table of Nations, an ancestor. Homer already knows it for skilled craftsmen and traders; the Hebrew Bible often uses 'Sidonian' loosely for Phoenicians generally, Tyre's own later dominance notwithstanding. JEZEBEL, who imports Baal worship into Israel, is 'daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians' (1 Kings 16:31, not yet on these pages). ⚠ Jesus later visits 'the region of Tyre and Sidon' in person (Matthew 15:21) — the only Gentile territory the Gospels record him personally entering — after first invoking the pair, here, as the standard against which Galilean unbelief comes off worse (11:21-22). It is also where a Canaanite woman meets him and is commended above Israel for her faith (15:22-28).
