'Wall' — the desert fronting Egypt's north-east frontier, possibly named for the Egyptian line of border forts, and crossed by the caravan road from Canaan. Hagar is found 'on the way to Shur' (16:7): an Egyptian, running home. Israel will cross the same wilderness from the other side after the sea-crossing (Exodus 15:22).
