'The prince of Judah,' who receives the temple vessels from Cyrus's treasurer (Ezra 1:8) and brings them up to Jerusalem — and whom Ezra 5:14-16 says was made governor and laid the foundation of the house of God. Then he vanishes, and every other account credits ZERUBBABEL with the foundation. Three explanations are current: that Sheshbazzar and Zerubbabel are one man under two names (a Babylonian court name and a Hebrew one, as with Daniel and his friends); that they are two men a generation apart; and that he is the SHENAZZAR listed among the sons of Jehoiachin at 1 Chronicles 3:18, which would make him a genuine Davidic prince and Zerubbabel's uncle. None is proven, and the gap is a real one in an otherwise well-documented period.
