Josiah's son, the first of his heirs to fall — known by his personal name SHALLUM (22:11) and his throne-name JEHOAHAZ. The people made him king after Josiah died at Megiddo, but he reigned only three months: Pharaoh Necho, returning south, deposed him, fined the land, and carried him to Egypt in chains, setting his brother Jehoiakim on the throne instead (2 Kings 23:31-34). Jeremiah's word over him is the chapter's opening dirge — 'weep not for the dead, weep for the one who goes away, for he will return no more, nor see the land of his birth' (22:10-12). He died in Egypt, the first Davidic king to end his days a foreign prisoner, and the pattern for the two who would follow.
