Once the capital of Lydia, King Croesus's own city, on an acropolis so steep it was thought unassailable — and was famously stormed twice anyway by night, both times because a sentry stopped watching the one climbable approach. The letter (Rev 3:1-6) is the only one of the seven with no commendation at all: 'you have a name that you live, and you are dead.' A few names there hadn't soiled their garments; the rest are told, with the city's own history behind the word, to become watchful or be come upon like a thief.
