That Riblah, on the Orontes in Syria, is where Pharaoh Neco deposed Jehoahaz and where Nebuchadnezzar killed Zedekiah’s sons in front of him before blinding him (2 Kings 23-25, not yet on these pages) — but it sits a long way north of a line that is about to come down to the Sea of Galilee, and many readers take this one to be a different place entirely. This entry does not choose; the coordinates point at the Syrian site and are marked approximate. ⭐ The Douay-Rheims supplies a detail no other version on either shelf has: following the Vulgate’s contra fontem Daphnim it prints ‘to Rebla over against the fountain of DAPHNIS’, identifying the neighbouring spring with Daphne, the watered suburb of Antioch — an identification the Hebrew does not make. It does at least keep the fountain, which is exactly what the Hebrew’s ‘Ain’ means.
