The umbrella name for the extinct giant-clans of the Transjordan, ‘reckoned’ the same as the Anakim of the south (Deuteronomy 2:11, 20). Each neighboring nation kept its own local name for the same category: the Moabites called their share Emim, ‘terrors’; the Ammonites called theirs Zamzummim. ⭐ The name is old — Genesis 14:5 (already on these pages) already lists the Rephaim among the peoples Chedorlaomer’s coalition struck in Abram’s own lifetime, alongside the Zuzim and Emim, centuries before Deuteronomy 2 revisits them. ⚠️ Og of Bashan, defeated in the next chapter, will be called ‘the last of the Rephaim’ (Deuteronomy 3:11, not yet on these pages) — the umbrella name outliving the whole people it once covered.
