Isaac's future wife — named, almost in passing, in the genealogical coda to the Aqedah: 'Bethuel fathered Rebekah' (22:23), the last of the eight sons and one granddaughter Milcah bore to Abraham's brother Nahor, back in the old country. The chapter that nearly ended the line of promise closes by quietly naming the woman who will carry it on — two chapters before Isaac meets her. When the servant is sent to find her (ch. 24), she is the decisive one: 'I will go' (24:58); at the well she waters ten camels unasked. She bears the twins Esau and Jacob, receives the oracle that 'the elder shall serve the younger' (25:23), and engineers the blessing to Jacob (ch. 27) — the matriarch who reads the promise better than her husband.
