Rabbah

The capital of Ammon, on the upper Jabbok — 'Rabbah of the Ammonites', and still called Amman today. It is the city outside whose wall Uriah the Hittite was placed to be killed while David stayed home (2 Samuel 11:14-17), and which David finally captured, taking the crown off its king's head (2 Samuel 12:26-31). Later, as PHILADELPHIA — renamed by Ptolemy II — it became one of the ten cities of the Decapolis. Amos promises fire in its wall, with a war cry and a whirlwind (1:14).
