Punon

A wilderness camp (Numbers 33:42), the second stop after Mount Hor. Feinan, its usual identification, is one of the largest ancient copper-smelting districts in the whole southern Levant, worked from the Chalcolithic period through Roman times — tens of thousands of tons of slag have been surveyed there. The text itself says nothing about mining, but three chapters earlier on these pages (Numbers 21:8-9), on this same stretch of the Edomite frontier, Moses makes a serpent OF BRONZE at Jehovah’s word — the itinerary is naming, without comment, the district where that metal actually came out of the ground.
