Grandson of Aaron, son of Eleazar, and the man who ends the plague at Baal-peor with a spear in Numbers 25:7-8. ⚠ His name is Egyptian — Pa-nehsi, 'the Nubian' or 'the southerner' — which is unremarkable for a Levite family of that period and is one of the small details that sits oddly beside his reputation as the defender of Israelite purity. He is given a 'covenant of everlasting priesthood' (25:13), and the later high-priestly line traces itself through him. ⭐ His afterlife is large and divided: Psalm 106:30-31 says the act was reckoned to him as righteousness, in the phrase Genesis 15:6 uses of Abraham's faith; the ZEALOTS of the first century took their name from the zeal of this verse, and 1 Maccabees 2:26 has Mattathias comparing himself to him; and rabbinic law then hedged the case so tightly that a zealot who asks permission is refused it. ⚠ Numbers 31:6 (now on these pages) has him carry the trumpets into the very war fought over what happened at Peor — the man who ended that crisis with his own hand personally leads the army sent to settle it with the nation whose women started it.
