Priest and paqid nagid — 'chief overseer in the house of Jehovah,' head of temple order — who answered the sermon over the Hinnom valley by striking Jeremiah and locking him overnight in the stocks (20:1-2): the first recorded violence against the prophet, administered by the temple's own police. He came back the next morning to a new name — Magor-Missaviv, Terror-All-Around — and a measured sentence: exile, death, and burial in Babylon, 'you, and all who love you, to whom you have prophesied falsehood' (20:6) — the chief of order was also a comfortable false prophet. (A different Pashhur — and a 'Gedaliah son of Pashhur' — appear among Jeremiah's enemies in 38:1; clay seal-impressions bearing that Gedaliah's name and his colleague 'Jehucal son of Shelemiah' were excavated a few meters apart in the City of David, sealed in the ash of the destruction Jeremiah foretold.)
