On (Heliopolis)

The ancient centre of the Egyptian sun-cult, where Joseph's father-in-law served as priest (41:45) — Egyptian Iunu, Greek HELIOPOLIS, 'sun city,' at the apex of the Delta inside modern Cairo. It was one of the oldest and most prestigious temple establishments in Egypt, the home of the Ennead and of Ra's own priesthood; a priest of On was an aristocrat of the religious establishment, which is the measure of the marriage Pharaoh arranges. Almost nothing of it survives above ground but a single standing obelisk of Senusret I (c. 1950 BC), which Joseph would have seen. Jeremiah names it Beth-shemesh, 'house of the sun' (43:13).
