King of Babylon 605–562 BC — the empire's great builder (the Ishtar Gate, the ziggurat Etemenanki) and Jerusalem's destroyer: the 605 campaign (the year of Carchemish, fixed by the Babylonian Chronicle) took Daniel; 597 took king Jehoiachin; 586 burned the city and the temple. Daniel's court tales give him a dream he refuses to tell (ch. 2), a furnace (ch. 3), a humbling madness — and, uniquely among scripture's tyrants, a doxology (4:34-37). Douay, via the Greek, spells him Nabuchodonosor.
