The limestone ridge east of Jerusalem, across the Kidron valley, rising a little above the temple mount and facing it — so that anyone standing on it looks down into the city. Named for the olive groves on its slopes; Gethsemane lies at its foot. Luke calls it by a place-name form, Elaiōn, 'Olivet', and adds that it is 'a sabbath day's journey' from Jerusalem — about two thousand cubits, two-thirds of a mile — which is the only time the Bible uses that measure. It is where David fled weeping from Absalom, where Zechariah 14:4 says Jehovah's feet will stand, where Jesus taught, wept over the city, and was arrested, and where Acts places the ascension.
