Israel's two kin-nations across the Jordan, born in the cave above Zoar on the worst night in Genesis: Moab ('from father,' the text's own sound-gloss) to Lot's firstborn daughter, Ben-Ammi ('son of my kin,' father of the Ammonites) to the younger (19:30-38). The Bible remembers the cousinhood without flattery — and then hands the line its grace note: from Moab comes Ruth, great-grandmother of David (Ruth 4:17), named in the genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1:5). Still on the map four centuries after Genesis closes: Daniel's last vision has Edom, Moab, and the chief of the sons of Ammon slipping the final king's hand (Daniel 11:41).
