'Who is like Jehovah?' (Mikhah, short for Mikha-yahu) — a Judean prophet of the later eighth century BC, contemporary with ISAIAH in Jerusalem and (earlier) with Amos and Hosea in the north. ⚠ Where Isaiah is a man of the royal court, Micah is a COUNTRYMAN — 'of Moresheth,' a farming village in the Shephelah about 25 miles south-west of Jerusalem — and he speaks for the rural poor being dispossessed by the capital's land-grabbing elite (2:1-2). The two prophets even share a poem (swords into plowshares, Micah 4:1-3 = Isaiah 2:1-4). Micah has a distinction no other prophet has: he is quoted BY NAME by a later prophet — the elders defending Jeremiah cite 'Micah of Moresheth… in the days of Hezekiah' and his line 'Zion will be plowed as a field' as the precedent that Hezekiah repented rather than kill the prophet (Jeremiah 26:18-19, the only such citation in the Hebrew Bible). His book gives the New Testament the birthplace of the Messiah (5:2, Bethlehem, quoted at Matthew 2:6) and the most famous one-line summary of true religion in the Old Testament (6:8, 'do justice, love mercy, walk humbly'). ⚠ Not the same as MICAIAH son of Imlah, the earlier northern prophet of 1 Kings 22, though the names are the same word.
