The youngest of Levi's three sons, and ancestor of the Merarites — the Levite clan charged with the tabernacle's heavy structural framework: its frames, bars, pillars, and sockets, the weight nobody sees once the fabric goes up (Numbers 3:36-37, already on these pages). His clan camped on the tabernacle's north side, completing the ring of Levite clans that closed around the tent on every side except the east, where Moses, Aaron, and Aaron's own sons camped directly before the entrance.
