Never once named in John's Gospel — she is simply 'the mother of Jesus,' present at exactly two scenes that frame the whole story: the wedding at Cana, where her 'whatever he tells you, do it' (2:5) is her last recorded sentence in scripture, and the foot of the cross, where Jesus gives her to the beloved disciple ('Woman, look — your son,' 19:26-27). The synoptics and Acts supply the name; John keeps her a role: the mother, first and last.
