A town of the Shephelah with a cave, where the five kings of the Amorite coalition hid after the rout at Gibeon, were shut in with great stones, and were brought out, killed and buried (Joshua 10:16–27, now on these pages); Joshua then took the town itself on that day (10:28). It is later listed among Judah’s lowland towns (Joshua 15:41, not yet on these pages). ⚠ Where it lay is not known. The Survey of Western Palestine placed it near the village of el-Mughar, north of the Sorek valley; other sites have been proposed, and none is settled.
