Son of Haran, Abram's orphaned nephew (11:27-28), who travels with him from Haran into Canaan (12:4-5). He chooses the well-watered plain and pitches his tent toward Sodom (13:10-12), is carried off in the war of the kings and rescued by his uncle (14:12-16), and by ch. 19 sits in Sodom's own gate. On the last night he hosts the two angels, offers his daughters to the mob (the text reports, it does not approve), lingers until he is dragged out by the hand, bargains his refuge down to little Zoar — and ends in a cave, wine-blind, made ancestor of Moab and Ammon by his own daughters. He speaks his last recorded word at Zoar; Genesis lets him leave in silence.
