A city of the Shephelah, taken by Joshua between Makkedah and Lachish and done to as he had done to the king of Jericho (Joshua 10:29–30, now on these pages). It later becomes a Levitical city of Judah (Joshua 21:13) and revolts against Judah in Jehoram’s reign (2 Kings 8:22); Sennacherib’s army moves on to it from Lachish (2 Kings 19:8); and Hamutal, mother of two kings of Judah, came from it (2 Kings 23:31; 24:18; none of these yet on these pages). ⚠ Its site is not settled; Tel Burna is one proposal. The name, ‘white’, is shared by a wilderness stopping-place in Numbers 33:20 (already on these pages), which is a different place.
