Kohath

The second of Levi's three sons, and ancestor of the Kohathites — the Levite clan assigned the single most dangerous duty in the wilderness camp: carrying the ark, the table, the lampstand, and the altars, the actual furniture that stood closest to the presence itself (Numbers 3:27-31, already on these pages). Their camp stood on the tabernacle's south side, under a supervisor ranked above the other two Levite clan-chiefs (Eleazar, Numbers 3:32). Kohath is also, through his son Amram, the grandfather of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam (Exodus 6:18-20, not yet on these pages) — the priesthood and its most demanding transport duty both running through the same family line.
